Hi,

I have a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 960, When I run Novabench my GPU makes a high pitch noise (like a screeching noise). This only happens during the graphics test. It also does this when I run games.

Is my gpu damaged? This noise worries me, and the performance.

Solution
Coil whine. That means that some little magnet it's vibrating so much on your GPU that you hear that pitch noise when the card is under load. Try with v-sync enabled, it should be less noise that way because it wont work with 100%. There's nothing that you can do about that :/

A 'screeching' noise is very likely a fan, and tho it is probably from the graphics card, it could potentially be from any system fan working overtime as a result of the strain.
Try to get your ear as close to the area as possible to determine exactly where it's coming from, and if you're still not sure, you can temporarily stop individual fans with your finger until you find it (and for those who are going to say you should never stop a fan, you're silly. One second isn't going to make or break anything).
I see someone replied while I was typing. If it is coil whine from the GPU fan, there is something you can do about it. You can get software that will allow you to control the RPM of the fan(s) and even set up a curve that adjusts speed along with temperature. Going faster or slower may get you around the point that the fan oscillates and goes into whine. Just make sure you monitor your temperatures while you do this.

I've been very lucky in the last year with gigabyte gpu's R9 290x 3x was ok, so was GTX 970, 980 had such strong coil whine that I sold entire PC because of that and now thank god I dont have coil whine on my 980 Ti, all 4 of them are From Gigabyte, all GTX's are G1 gaming series :D Only 1 was "rotten apple" :p

The whole problem with coil whine is it is caused by cheap fans. They are not a firm seated fan with bearings, but just a cheap fan with play that has coils that hover around the magnet. If you push up and down on the fan center, you'll see it has play. At certain RPM's it will oscillate and make that noise.
As I said, you can grab software to control the RPM's yourself, or if you're handy, you can replace the fan(s) yourself with a similar sized quality fan.

lol, you do know coil whine has nothing to do with fans, right? Like i said before, when coil whine is present is because of a magnet inside of the GPU vibrating so much and you can reduce it with v-sync, the more FPS's that go through the GPU the louder coil whine will be. So just set to 60fps or turn on v-sync

Fair enough, I was getting side tracked there too.
I think our problem G-Star is mostly due to our terminology.
When I say 'fan', I don't mean blades, but the whole unit.
When you say GPU (at this level of troubleshooting), I think of the chip, not the card as a whole.
I still stand by my suggestion of playing with RPM's or replacing the fan unit.
Cheers for helping out too.

ps: I couldn't listen to that guy's whine long enough to know what he was saying either... sorry
