So I have this laptop X550JX-DB71 coming friday and I have a spare Samsung 250 gig SSD laying around so I figured what better way to instantly improve this laptop than swapping it out. But my question is since its a fresh laptop and I have no data on it whats the best way to get an operating system on it? It comes with Windows 8.1 apparently. Id upgrade to 10 since I think its free. Am I better off just getting like a usb to sata adapter and mirroring it or is there a way to create a recovery media and will that work with a new blank ssd? Hope all that makes sense. Thanks for any advice.

The easiest way would be to create a system image and clone the HDD to the SSD and then swap them. You could do that with an external drive or using the SATA to USB adapter as you said. Another option is to replace the optical drive with a HDD adapter and clone from one to the other, allowing you to keep the HDD for storage, providing you don't need an optical drive.

I'd download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and create either a bootable USB or DVD, then put the SSD in the laptop and install Win10 directly from media. You should be able to use the Win8.1 product key with Win10 setup - it will automatically upgrade the licence.
