Hi guys,

I'm looking to build my first PC that I plan to use for the following:

Photo editing (inc batch processing)
Creating time lapse videos from photos
Video editing (inc 4K)
Some gaming (Minecraft, maybe more demanding games like GTA V and Day Z)

All of this usage is for leisure at present, but I'd like to create professional-quality videos. Once I have the skill!

Presently, using an old laptop, I am so tired of waiting for videos to process that I am entirely demotivated and feel discouraged from my hobbies, so it's time for a new PC.

Photo and video capabilities are most important, and as long as I can play some games with a decent frame rate (low/med settings) I'll be happy. I'm looking for something that will last me, or at least be sufficiently upgradable that I dont have to buy everything again 4 years down the line.

Budget is kinda open: it's for leisure so I don't need a £5000 workstation, but I'm also not limited to spending £200 either. I guess best bang for buck is what I'm looking for.

I have an old GTX 570 (I think) that I planned to put in it, at least to get me up and running, with a view to upgrading further down the line. I also won't need an OS (I'll be running Win7, maybe 10 later on). For all other components, I am open to all suggestions. This will be my first build so I respect the superior experience of the community!

Cheers,
tb

You will be able to edit 4K with the 570, but you will need to reduce the Viewer resolution in Premiere - probably to 1/4 - but then I'm guessing you'll be doing that anyway since I doubt you have a 4K monitor?

An X99 based 6 or 8-core system would be lovely (especially overclocked...), along with the quad-channel RAM that allows, but it is an altogther pricier set-up - the i7 6700K will be fine, especially since Premiere and Adobe Media Encoder offload so much of the encoding to the GPU

Considering GPUs, do have a look at this:

... since the 970 and 980 are not yet listed as...
Lots of power below with the Skylake i7 and a GTX 980. ...also with a pair of 28" 4k displays, mechanical keyboard, and high DPI mouse. Thoughts?

sadams04 spec is fine, but it would help if you told us what software you will be using.

Btw I also use a GTX570 for photo and video editing and it is ok for HD, but for 4K you will almost certainly want something more powerful - a 970 or 980.

sadams04 - thanks for the spec! I'd considered the i7-6700, sounds like it'd be good for what I want, do you think I'd be better off with this rather than 6 cores (eg 5820 at £50 more)? Also I forgot to say that for now I plan to reuse keyboard, mouse and monitor (just the 1) to keep the cost down a bit - unless there's very good reasons not to? All in, your build is more than I was thinking of spending - 3 figures would be ideal - but I know that spending less can be a false economy!

snowctrl - good point, I also forgot that. Lightroom, Photoshop, AfterEffects, Premiere, maybe Gopro Studio.

TBH I am quite new to this, but these are probably the key programs I will use. Regarding the 570, will that actually stop me from editing 4K or will it just slow it down? The laptop that I am currently using is so old and slow that I think basically anything above a raspberry pi would be an upgrade... I thought I might try to make do with the 570 in the interim (maybe a year) then get a better card like a 980 when prices have dropped and/or when I've got tired of waiting! What are your experiences with this card?

... since the 970 and 980 are not yet listed as certified GPU options, you might want to hang onto that 570 for a little while longer.... (the 570 is not certified for the 2015 releases but was for 2014 and earlier and I can attest that it still works fine)
