Hp laserjet 4 not receiving all the data

My hp laserjet 4 printer just stopped printing on my local XP system with a parallel connection. The printer que shows that some data gets transferred, but never all. On small print jobs it stops at .1kb short, larger jobs quite a bit more.

I can print tests from the printer menu itself, but nothing from the computer.

What should i be looking for here?

Ive tried:
New drivers
Reinstalling printer
Reinstalling parallel port
New parallel cable

That was what I was trying to describe from memory. Interesting that it worked worse with no spooling (buffering)...

You might verify that the LPT port is set to EPP mode. Also verify that the cable has IEEE1284 somewhere on it.

I dont see an option specifically mentioning a buffer, but i did try the "send directly to printer" option instead of spooling. That resulted in a complete time out with no data transfered.
