Specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium OEM
ASRock 970 Extreme4 AM3+
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

Haven't updated BIOS since 2011. Want to upgrade from current CPU to an AMD FX 8350. Downloaded what I assume to be the necessary BIOS update (2.80 Windows). When I try to run installer, I get this message.

How should I proceed?

Sorry, I'm not sure if I know what that means. I downloaded the Windows .zip file and tried to run it in Windows but I get that error, and I'm afraid to continue for fear of ruining the motherboard.

There was a Flash version of the 2.80 BIOS (in addition TO DOS) if that's what you mean, though I read it's better to download the Windows version.

Yes, it's already unzipped. But when I run the application it provides, I get the error message.

What BIOS version are you currently using and what version have you downloaded?

You can see what version you currently have with a tool like CPU-Z. When you run it you can check the version of your BIOS under the mainboard tab. The revision of your motherboard could also be important to what BIOS version it can be upgraded.

Sometimes only certain (newer) revisions of a motherboard can be updated with a BIOS that will allow certain newer types of CPU's

Hey guys. Just wanted put this here for the record just in a case anyone else has a similar issue.

The problem was not force shutting down Windows Updates or a faulty hard drive. The issue was my GTX 760 video card driver, which had failed to initialize. Leaving me with a black screen with a solid white dash. I resolved the issue by removing the GTX 760 video card and installed my previous GTX 560TI card, after which it booted up, and restarted, fully initializing the driver. I have the GTX 760 reinstalled, and everything seems to work fine.
