I have a Lenovo Thinkpad x61 laptop/tablet and its power adapter decided to die last night. I ordered another one online but it wont arrive until Tuesday and I need to use it Tuesday morning before the mail comes. I have an HP power adapter thats rated 18V and 2.23A LPS(don't know if LPS means anything important), the original adapter is rated 20V at 3.25A. The polarity symbol (at least I think thats what it is) is identical so if I chop the plug off the dead adapter and soldier it to the HP one, would the laptop at least charge or would it be too underpowered? The original adapter is 65W and after to swap it would be about 40, which bring me some concern that it wont power it well. I will take all responsibility if anything goes wrong. Thanks in advance for any tips

So I decided to do it and its charging the battery! I really don't want to try powering it up in fear of it overheating like you said. So far so good with charging the battery, I will monitor the temp to make sure it doesn't overheat just charging either. Thanks getochkn!
