So I recently built my first rig and I am pretty excited about it. I am using an MSI Z170A Gaming M5 motherboard and after installing the basic drivers from the CD, MSI live update prompted me of many different updates. One of them being a BIOS update.

I have looked online on how to flash update my BIOS and it seems relatively straight forward. From what I have gathered the process seems to be. **download drivers from website-- store them on a USB--open BIOS and run M Flash--install updated files from USB--profit**

However, I have seen websites mention the required use of third party programs to prep the USB drive or mobo. I dont know if i need these programs and was hoping to get some clarification on what I need to do to update my BIOS without bricking the mobo.

Lastly, I have not used MSI live update to update my BIOS because I have read that this leads to an immediate bricking of the mobo. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thank you for your time and help!

Memory leak is not connected to bios. BIOS improved memory capability, means it can run more memory modules (which were not supported so far, like different brands and timings) meaning if your PC runs, then this changes nothing. You have to look at a software problem, not bios problem.
It's always best to do it the usb way, but there is one general rule which applies to 95% of the motherboard users:
Don't flash your bios, unless you need it.
Need to means your CPU can't run on this version of bios and you need a newer one, but this is not the case for you. 99% of the times you won't even notice a difference when you flash the bios, and if you do it's most likely to be a negative difference.
If you are so keen on updating it follow MSI's own guide: http://www.msi.com/product/motherboard/support/Z170A-GAMING-M5.html#down-quickguide

Well I have had some issues with memory leaks and was wondering if updating would help. Earlier this week my system was consuming about 80% of my RAM when idling. (I have 16gb) I updated a few drivers and it helped, however, system still idles at about 30-38% RAM useage. (4-5gb) I have a few more drivers to update and hopefully that fixes it, but I doubt it since it is my sound driver. So I am tempted to upgrade the BIOS since MSI's update notes that the new BIOS update has "improved memory capatability". So do you think that a BIOS update could be the key to getting my idle RAM useage under control?
