Hi,

I put together my own PC six months ago, specs are:

Windows 8
ASUS Z-97K/CSM
Sapphire ATI R9 290
Corsair CX Series 750W CX750M
i5-4690k
16GB DDR3 1600 MHz (2x8)
500 GB SSD
1TB HDD

The problem I've had almost since day one seems related to my motherboard/SSD, which has the operating system on it.

Occasionally, my screen will go black - render black, instead of rendering nothing - and the only thing which does anything is if I restart my desktop.

It doesn't happen when I'm playing any game off my steam library, but it does happen during general use - browsing, streaming, etc. On bad days, it happens seconds after I boot up, rendering my PC unusable. I've started to boot up a game and let it run in the background to avoid the shutdown. Sometimes when booting, I'll get a "Operating System not found" error, which goes away if I leave my desktop to its tantrum.

I've turned off all sleep modes on the PC, and I've played around with the mobo configs, switching from AHCI to IDE (having read that windows 8 may have a problem during install with AHCI, if it's set to default on the mobo). The only difference this seems to have made is that the OS error has stopped popping up now. I've also replaced my old SSD (128GB) with the 500gb one, switched around the SATA ports, replaced power cables, and checked my motherboard.

The only things I can think of now are replacing PSU and motherboard, both of which I'd rather not do due to cost.

Any ideas what might be causing this?
