New HDD, same drive letter as old HDD?

Ok so I will try and explain as best I can:

One of my HDD's is starting to fail, will not be recognized randomly and I have ALOT of games from steam on it. It is plugged in properly and everything. I can even unplug it, then plug it back in, and it will be recognized. Sometimes it goes days, sometimes it will randomly drop while I am gaming.

I am planning on getting a very large HDD to house my game collection on and am wondering if this will work:

1. Plug in new HDD
2. Transfer everything from the dying HDD to the new HDD
3. Unplug the old HDD
4. Plug the new HDD into the old HDD's spot
5. Give the new HDD the old HDD's location name (in this case G: )

I know that by plugging the new HDD in while the old one is still plugged in, it will give it a new drive name (like J: or whatever), but is it possible to change that?

I feel like it is do-able, but I cannot find anything via searching. Most of it is how to transfer stuff. I know how to do that. I want to be able to rename the new HDD's drive name to match the old HDD's drive name (G: ) so that I won't have to re-download every single game and when I open steam and play a game, the game is in the proper spot already.

I hope I made this as clear as possible, and any and all help is greatly appreciated!

P.S. - I do have an external HDD but it is full, so using that to transfer is out of the question. I could try and see if a friend/co-worker has an external HDD to use so that I could transfer from old HDD to external HDD, then plug new HDD into the old HDD's spot, give it the G: name and then transfer everything from the external HDD to the new HDD. Maybe?

YES!

I did mean drive letter by drive name, hence the (G: ) stuff. But I could not find this anywhere, thank you SO much!
