I currently dont have a monitor or headphones that play sound and I cant run most games such as skyrim because it says I have no sound device. I updated all drivers and when I put my friends usb headset in, it runs. Thanks!

An interesting situation. I didn't think game developers did that, I know in the past you could run most games without sound (for memory reasons back then, but still) I did have a few month period in the early 2000s when my sound card was on its way from an RMA and every game then ran without it.

Might check the Bethesda forums for a -nosound switch you can add to the executable or something. Just for accessibility I would think that would be a desired option. Been a while since I ran into a deaf gamer, but it has happened in a few MMOs.

USB headsets have an internal sound card\playback card. Headsets with analog connectors (3.5mm or 1/8th" mini or 1/4" jacks) need to be connected to an audio device such as on your PC's motherboard or a discreet sound card in the PC.

okay, thanks

There used to be options to disable sound in most games up till about 2007 or 2008. That is when I started noticing the option disappearing in games. I don't know the catalyst for this but some games do still have sound disabling options without getting into config or ini files. Seems to be more rare these days.

Might have to do with the game engines they make these days. Just hard coded to have every action with an optional sound or something and initialization is needed at engine launch. I can see it taking a lot of excess CPU to have a flag in there to 'mute' each sound as events occurred. Could just be pure laziness on the part of the developers though.
