My Hp pavilion laptop recently stopped working, upon start up it said I needed to install an operating system. I then new I needed a new hard drive. I don't use the laptop much so I wanted to have a little fun and replace a few parts, including the HDD to an SSD to make it faster. I ended up purchasing an external enclosure so I could get my OS off of the HDD along with some other pictures and documents. However, when I connect the HDD my computer freezes and then blue screens
(I connect the HDD after starting up windows on my desktop). Is there some way to work around this? Or am I SOL and going to have to blow $70 on another windows key?

I have also try using the SSD I purchased with the enclosure and everything shows up fine.

The OS license could be used to install windows on an SSD in the same laptop. You would either have to get a restore disk from the vendor or get the correct disk image to install onto that SSD. You will still have to get the drivers from the laptop manufacturer.

You may not be able to get any data off that failed HD.
