I picked up a Dimaond R7 240 yesterday to satisfy system requirements for a software upgrade. There were no real instructions included with this card, and what is there actually doesn't even apply to this model, so I come to you...
I was running (2) monitors on an old X1300 card using Win 8.1 on an old Dell Optiplex 755, with a KVM switch on the main monitor for use on a 2nd machine. I use it for CAD work; mostly 2D, but some mild, low demand 3D.
Just to get things rolling, I only plugged the main monitor (monitor 1) into the VGA port because that's all I had on hand (I didn't have DVI or HDMI cables for these monitors, just the VGA and DMS-59).
I got the drivers installed and began working... Suddenly, after about an hour, the screen went black... the machine was still running, so I switched over to the other machine to make sure the monitor was okay, and everything was fine. I switched back, still nothing, so I unplugged monitor 1 and plugged in monitor 2 to the VGA port; still nothing. Again, the machine was still running so I had to shut it down with the power button. After rebooting, monitor 2 (in place of monitor 1) came up fine and everything was back to "normal". I uninstalled the drivers and started over.
Before rebooting, I remembered that I had a VGA to (what appears to be) DVI-A adapter from a previous machine, and after locating it, plugged it into the "single link DVI" (as quoted in the card's specs; what I found interesting was that the image on the box showed a dual link DVI-D, and the card *appears* to have a dual link DVI-I...). I plugged both monitors in and rebooted, but Windows will only detect the monitor that is plugged into the VGA port (I tried switching the monitors). So, for now, DVI appears dead.
Today, I went back to the store and picked up an Asus R7 240, because I had read several accounts of others using it with my specific machine. I also picked up a DVI-D/DVI-D cable and a different DVI adapter (the sales guy insisted that these would be compatible).
First I tried the new adapter/cable with the Diamond card, and nothing changed.
I wiped the drivers etc again and started over with the ASUS card, only to be left with the same problem; no display detected from the DVI port at all.
So, I'm guessing it must be something I'm doing wrong, or an issue with my machine... Why would the DVI port not work on either card?
Also, what might have caused my screen to go blank early on?
