Hello everyone, I was wondering how I can get my FX 8350 to run overclocked past 4.4ghz? It will run stuff normally on 4.4ghz (haven't tried games yet) but my system will freeze/bluescreen if I set it to 4.5ghz (and I've tried bumping the cpu voltage from 1.375v to 1.381v and I still got nothing.

This is my first overclock, so I might be missing a few details but let me know what I should include!

Specs:
Mobo: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
CPU: Amd fx 8350 black edition
RAM: Corsair vengeance ddr3 1600mhz (16gb - 2 sticks total)
PSU: Corsair TX 850watt
GPU: xfx ati r9 290x

I also use a corsair h80i GT cpu cooler, which I reapplied some thermal compound to the cpu yesterday.

After an hour on Prime95, my socket temp will reach 65 degrees, and the core temp reaches about 59 degrees. After an hour stress-testing at 4.4ghz, my PC will freeze up, forcing me to restart it.

I should also note that my PSU does NOT have an extra 4pin atx cable for the extra 4pin slot on the motherboard, which I've read is meant for stability when overclocking the CPU.

Another thing is that when I was overclocking the CPU, I noticed it was changing my DRAM frequency as well, I already set it to 1600mhz (since 1333 or 1300 was the mobo default) but I noticed it was being increased to 1700ish mhz with the cpu oc'd to 4.4ghz...and I was getting little "DRAM voltage" errors on my desktop while it was idling.

If I'm missing any important details let me know and thanks in advance for your help!

Even if it was new, where you bought it from wouldn't matter. Chip A from Newegg might overclock to 5.2GHz. Chip B from Newegg might not be stable at 4.4GHz. As SR-71 stated, it's the luck of the draw.

Some CPU's are great overclockers others not so good.

Luck of the DRAW.

MY 8350 , that I ran a few years back overclocked like a champ.

Yea that could be a possibility. Thing is I bought it from a high-rated seller on ebay NEW so I don't know if I'd be able to rma it to amd for a replacement haha.

I have the fx 8320 and can successfully get it to 4.5 ghz stable, there are 3 things I think could be preventing you from getting past 4.4

1) voltage, I know you said you bumped it up a bit, but your cpu might just need more power... 1.45 is as far as I would go.
2)mobo- you have good board, but AMD chipsets are known to get VERY hot. you may need a fan near the chipset too cool it off. (I have 970 chipset board and the northbridge consistently gets much hotter than my cpu.)
3)you might just have a bad chip, its a lottery and your silicone might just be bad at overclocking.

Hope this helps

It does help, thank you. Oh and I forgot to mention that my case is an Antec 1200 (must be version 1 or whatever, I got it 5 years ago). So there's like 7 case fans and 1 extra fan on the radiator, one of the corsair ones that came with the h80i gt.

Well I mean it was new when I got it, had the plastic wrapping, tape and everything. It was like $20 cheaper so I bought it, but shame on me because I usually buy from newegg D:

even though you have 7 case fans one of cons of watercooling is that there are no fans directly over the chipset to cool it, I suspect thats the problem, good luck.
