I have been told that replacing my R9-290 with a GTX 980 is not a much of an upgrade considering the price/performance ratio so i was wondering which GTX 980Ti would be worth getting? I also would consider getting the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB CLASSIFIED if it sounds like it would be worth it.

Here are the ones i like.
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB SC+ $660
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB FTW $670
MSI GTX 980Ti GAMING 6G $650

So those are the one i like and i will not want to do any watercooling and hardly any overclocking. I will be playing at 1080p and i know some say a 980Ti is overkill for 1080p but considering a 980Ti still goes under 40FPS on some AAA games like the Witcher 3 and GTAV at 1080p i do not think a 980Ti is overkill by any means so i will stick with 1080p for a bit longer. So which do you guys think would give me the best performance? My PSU is a good quality 550W and i heard a 290 uses more power than a 980Ti so i hope it can handle a 980Ti.

Solution
I would recommend the MSI GTX 980Ti Gaming 6G. I currently one one and it is heavily overclocked up to 1475mhz on boost and I am still keeping temperatures under 75 degrees at full load. This means on games like Witcher 3 I can run everything on ultra at 1440p.

If you are not going to be overclocking this you will be running at a much lower temperature and still will still be able to run everything on ultra at 60fps.

I agree with them, I really don't think a 980ti makes any sense at 1080p... A 970 is probably the most I would use for 1080p, after that I think it's sort of pointless. I'd say just save your cash. Go get a nice dinner somewhere

incorrect

if you want to truly max out some games a 980 ti is mandatory even at 1080p

anything less than a 980 ti and you would be disappointed as you already have a 290

you really need a good 650w for a 980 ti

Ummm id say almost every AAA game out this and last year. a 980Ti gets under 40FPS on GTAV and Witcher 3 with EVERY setting up. A 980Ti is not even close to being overkill in fact it is not even a 1080p proof card in my opinion because as of now only a Titan X can kill 1080p and it still has got under 50FPS on some 1080p titles. Just because a 980Ti has a big price tag does not mean it is a 1440p or 4K killer man.

Ehhh it only needs 500w i really do not want to spend that much on the PSU.............also...............i braided all of my cables on my PSU with Paracord and i do not want to throw it out because i put a lot of work in it man lol

You sir speak the truth. My Friend has a 980Ti and he plays at 1080p and he says he wants to get another to SLI them so he can dominate 1080p in every way and i know what he means because even 1 980Ti goes under 40FPS at 1080p on some games.

Well my Wife has a 750Ti and she wants a better GPU and i thought if i got a new one she could have mine and it will fix both our problems in one go and such and the 980Ti is the only card id want and id rather Die than get another AMD card because AMD is dying out and all they do is re brand and when they do come out with a new card, like the Fury X its pure garbage.

AMD's refreshes of an old product are still beating their 'new' nvidia counterparts at each price point except the fury X. (which only wins @ 4k and above resolutions). I'd say that's quite indicative of a solid design.

And if i thought the fury x was pure garbage, i certainly wouldn't have gotten a second for crossfire ;)

In any case, no none of the 980s would be a worthwhile upgrade. 980 TIs would give you a decent upgrade. If you dont want to overclock, get the one with the fastest clock speeds out of the box that isn't marked up against its competitors.

Dude it has 4GB of VRAM that itself makes the Fury X pure garbage in my opinion and considering the Price i think it is yet again another AMD rip off. I mean it cost so much yet performs less than a 980Ti, AMD is only alive because of the Consoles in my opinion because hardly anyone is buying the re branded AMD cards in comparison to the NVIDIA line up. AMD is cheaper because they are made cheaper and perform worse and this is coming from an AMD lover like me. I love AMD and always have but i will not say AMD is better because we all know AMD is a dying breed. Hell AMD does not even make new cards they just put a new name on old ones because they do not have the Technology or cash to put out new great performing cards like NVIDIA does. I was going to get a Fury X but considering its low performance, Extremely low VRAM, and the high Price i want to go with a 980Ti and get the best in all aspects. An ok thanks man :)
