Windows 7 won't detect usb memory sticks or external hard drives

So I just booted my newly built computer (Motherboard: MSI Z170A pc mate) with windows 7 from usb memory stick.

I have no optical drive so I'm trying to install the motherboard drivers via usb, but the computer won't detect the memory stick.

I've tried both 2.0 and 3.0 ports, and also external hard disk (hard disk lights up and works, but doesn't show up in windows).

Mouse and keyboard connected to usb work just fine.

What's going on?

Thanks in advance for any help/answers.

If you can boot Windows from a USB, you should be able to boot Linux from a USB, and Linux has most of the drivers you would need built in to its kernel. So you could boot from a live Linux installation and copy the driver files to the computer's hard drive, then exit and boot to Windows again.

I have not installed any drivers at all yet, can't access their website because of no network drivers.

I realize what I need to do might just be to get hold of a sata optical drive and install the mobo drivers with cds, but if there's any other way to fix this that'd be preferable.
