Hello there, so I am just wondering whether my Intel core i5 4460 is bottle necking my GTX 980 TI, because the only way to get 90%-100% out of my GPU is to play at 4k, yielding a very respectable 40-50fps. However, considering my GPU is capable of higher frame rates at 1440p and 1080p, why is my GPU usage only at 40%-50% when playing at these resolutions- extremely annoying!!! Any help would be much appreciated.

Solution
If your hitting 100% cpu usage then yes your cpu so holding you back. GTA V is quite a high cpu usage game and AC Unity needs an insane amount of cpu horsepower. Your only option is to turn down some setting which will lighten the load on the cpu

An i5 of that caliber will not bottleneck the Ti. Are you seeing any serious frame drops or stuttering?

On a lot of games you won't see the 980ti going into a long period of high usage.

What are your GPU temps?

I also play gta v on a 980ti but with a 4790k, I rarely see my gpu running hard, in fact sometimes it takes forever to even kick the fans on.

Hi Lone, I voted down by accident. I am not seeing any serious frame drops but I am only getting around 60-70 fps at 1080 very high settings with GPU usage at around 60%, then my frames will drop to around 40-45ish whilst my GPU usage is at 40% like i say. It's just so infuriating because the 980 TI is surely able to max this game out at 1080p and get well over 60fps. As for my temps, i get around 69-73 degrees.

Hi sizzling, my cpu usage is between 90%-100% on pretty much most games. It is literally just GTA 5 that is giving me this low gpu usage, with frame rate problems at the moment. The only other game that is problematic is AC Unity, but, the less said about that game the better as it runs badly regardless of what system you have!

Thanks, therefore A) which settings would you recommend that i turn down (cpu intensive settings) and B) which cpu would you recommend i purchase so that i am good for the foreseeable future, perhaps an i7 4970k?

you will notice 100% in a lot of games...I am still doubting it is due to a bottleneck, if so its not a big one.

If you want to change settings then try dropping all AA to maybe 2x and then see...also make sure that Vsync isn't n in NVidia or game even though it doesn't sound like it is.

I have a 4790k and still see high usage.

When playing the game alt tab to task manager and see what all is using cpu.

What are your cpu temps? Is your bios n default settings?

90 degrees=possible throttle. May try an aftermarket cooler?
