Hello, guys! A friend of mine built me a computer with a great discount and he used most of the money for the CPU and the GPU, while he cheaped-out on the PSU and i'm a bit worried.
The PC has an i5-4690 and a GTX 950 Windforce, 8 gigs of ram and the PSU is "Spire power supply ATX Pearl 550w". This PSU costs like $25 and I am really worried how long is it gonna last, can it ruin my whole system, can I game on it?
Can I play demanding games with this cheap power supply for like 2-3 months maximum and then i will get a better one. Like EVGA 600w 80+ Bronze.

Solution
The PSU is designed for old P4 systems; not for newer systems that require PCIe connectors.

If it's this one, then it clearly says "Gaming: No" http://www.spire-corp.com/power-supplies/pearl-550-sp-atx-550z-ppfc/specs/ How did he connect the GPU power with a PSU that doesn't seem to include any PCI-E connectors? The manufacturer indicates that it's a budget PSU not suited to gaming, but that doesn't mean anything bad will happen. Fortunately a GTX 950 doesn't draw much power from the 12V rail; 10A or less at full load. In the end it's your decision.

Yes it's that power supply. And I dont know how he connected it, because the PC isn't at home yet so I haven't seen it.
I know it says "Gaming: No" but what does that mean? Can't it play games like gta v? If not, can I just play something not that demanding like League of Legends and CS:GO?

the "Gaming: no" line probably means that it does NOT have any PCIe power connectors (6 pin or 8pin) for a graphics card. the 550W rating might also be..... ambitious. they spend more time spec'ing the box it comes in and the lack of an LED than any actual power ratings or current ratings of the power supply. also, "550W nominal" is flakey. what is nominal to them?

i run an i3-4130 and a GTX760 from an EVGA 430W without any issues. it's affordable, and can handle that card. i think the GTX950 is similar in terms of power use. and your i5 is only a wee bit more than my i3.

XFX 550W power supply is evidently very good for the price.

Alright, boys. The PC came and it turns out it really couldn't work with this psu. So he used an EVGA 430W 80+ that he happened to have at home. I wonder if it's gonna be enough. I will test it out with games like gta v, far cry 4 and see if it's good. What do ya think?
