Brand New i7-6700 CPU Sluggish performance

I've just got new parts for my PC (MSI mobo and Intel CPU). The PC boots fine, everything such as: Folders, web browser seem to work fine. But when it comes to gaming, the PC is running worse than before.

My previous CPU was AMD Athlon II x4 750k Black Edition
The new one is Intel i7-6700

The game I've tested was Guild Wars 2. It's lagging horribly especially in places with many players. The game was lagging a bit with AMD processor too, but it was playable. The current new CPU i7-6700 is unbearable. I've had to set to lowest possible graphics settings to be able to play with lags. And I am running game on R9 270 GPU (not integrated graphics). The game mainly lags at locations where are many players online.

Is it possible to fix this issue? Are all Intel CPUs like this? If so, I'd sell the new CPU and mobo, and get the AMD FX instead.

That 6700 should be able to beat the Athlon II with six of its cores tied behind its back.

It's entirely possible that Guild Wars 2 depends more on the GPU, so your CPU upgrade didn't do anything for it at all. If that's the case, because the new CPU is so much better, you may have made the problem worse because it can feed more data to your GPU but your GPU can't handle it.

Try other games and see what happens.

If Guild Wars 2 isn't GPU-dependent, then it could be residual drivers and settings for the AMD stuff interfering with performance (assuming you kept your existing Windows install when you upgraded the hardware). This is the main reason I always recommend a clean install of Windows when upgrading hardware.

You can try to fix the situation with driver uninstaller programs and Windows registry cleaner programs.

I've had my windows Freshly reinstalled. Anyway just now I've tweaked my graphics settings a bit. I've set them to medium again just like I've had with Athlon. Honestly I don't see much difference. FPS improved in locations with many players and little action (such as towns) it boosted from 45~56FPS to 53~60FPS (depends on player number around). In places with many players and lots of animations and action (world pvp, boss battles) I see very little difference, it's not 60FPS most of the time, but performance might improved by extra 5FPS.

Anyway I've tried some 3D designing tasks where I need to rely on my CPU. The improvement was definitely noticeable. Tasks which used to take over 30 seconds to complete, now finishes just in a few seconds. The improvement for work environment is definitely noticeable, but little or no difference to gaming.

Would be nice if there was a way to improve the performance in games. I definitely know that in MMO games, where are many players lag can be only caused by lack of CPU power.

Another thing is I can't find Intel settings. Like the ones I can find on my tablet. I am pretty much sure there should be settings for Intel integrated graphics too.

If you didn't see much difference with that CPU upgrade, then the game you are playing is definitely GPU-bound, not CPU-bound.

And this -- "I definitely know that in MMO games, where are many players lag can be only caused by lack of CPU power" -- is wrong.

So yeah, you need to upgrade your GPU now to match the power of your CPU. That R9 270 wasn't even a good gaming card when it was introduced in 2013. It sure as hell isn't good now.

What CPU settings are you looking for?

And you'll need to install the integrated graphics drivers, assuming you can use both discrete and integrated at the same time. I know you could with Z68, but I don't know if you can with Z170. I never bothered to find out as I knew I'd never use it anyway.

You realized that i7s are overestimated and overpriced if you buy them only for gaming.
The R9 270 is still a good card for 1080p gaming with high/mid settings.

It's a silly question. But where can I put my new i7 to use? Is there any specific CPU heavy programs? I've been doing some light video editing and 3D design work with my Athlon. I am willing to take a step further and learn using more advanced programs.

Would be cool, if someone gave me at least a few examples of programs that rely on CPU. Wish to try out my i7-6700.
