How can I keep a program running when I switch user profiles?

I run a small server on my PC some of the time but when I switch between user profiles (I do this because I share the PC with one other person) I have to shut down the server and start it back up on the other user profile. All files and programs are shared between the two accounts accept for the saves for a couple of games and a Steam shortcut. So everything involving the server's .exe or .ini is shared between the profiles.

Is there a way I can keep the server running without hitching, locking up, or crashing when I change between the user profiles?

Solution
Simple, don't log out of the first profile, just switch to the new one. Desktop programs are not automatically closed or suspended when switching profiles. Now, if your particular program crashes when you try to access it from another profile, you'll have to ask the developer what to do, since we can't really help you with programs that don't work properly from the beginning.
