My computer completely shuts down when playing assassins creed syndicate for about 15 minutes, I think it is down to over heating as I hear the cpu fan going mental, what would be a good cooling system.

Looking to spend about $30-$60 maybe a bit more if I can swing it

The FX 8350 is a pretty power hungry CPU, and most of the lower end AM3+ boards don't have the VRMs needed to run the CPU at full speed without running into problems. Usually you'd encounter throttling though, where your CPU clock would constantly bounce between 1.4 and 4.0 GHz as the VRMs struggle to remain cool, that usually doesn't cause shutdowns.

The M5A97 R2.0 only has a 4+1 phase VRM, which isn't good for the 8 core FX CPUs, but they do at least have heatsinks on them, so they shouldn't be overheating too badly. I wouldn't recommend attempting an overclock with that motherboard. Monitor your temperatures with AMD Overdrive, if your thermal margin is hitting zero, then that's likely the cause of the problem, if you don't have a...
I'd recommend one of these coolers.

Here are two very good CPU coolers, both in your price range.

Looking at the Liquid cooling set, it says it comes with pre-applied paste, would it be better to remove that and add something else? Because the stuff that come with the stock heatsink with the cpu doesn't seem to great.

Hang on, we don't know what the problem is and I reckon PSU is more likely. Overheating very rarely causes a complete shut down unless it happens very quickly.

What are your cpu and gpu temps while gaming, especially just before the shutdown?

What is your full pc spec including make and model of PSU?

Usually overheating leads to thermal throttling, only if thermal throttling fails to reduce the temperature and the temperature continues to rise will the pc shut down.

When you say shut down is it like a complete loss of power?

The psu I was using when it would shut down was a thermaltake TR-2 600w, I replaced with it a EVGA 110-B2-0750-VR 80 PLUS Bronze 750 W

Yes it just completely shuts off.

I am having video card issues as games quit to desktop with video card drivers saying quit and restarted, but I am buying a new one and then going to rma this one back to gigabyte.

System specs are:

Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard
AMD FX-8350
8gb hyprX
EVGA 110-B2-0750-VR 80 PLUS Bronze 750 W PSU
Gigabyte 960 gtx 2gb Windforce
1tb seagate

I'd measure the CPU & GPU temperatures, it will prove if heat is the issue or not. Both of those PSU's should have been fine, so highly unlikely both have a fault.

Are you running the latest gpu drivers?
Have you overcooked the GPU?

I'd like someone else to chip in as I'm not overly familiar with AMD motherboards but I believe that board doesn't really have sufficient VRM's for a FX8xxx series cpu

Yeah the card has the latest drivers I rma'd the first one I had back to new egg and this one did the same thing. but different games have different issues.

When I bought the board the guys at Tiger Direct said this would be fine for the FX

So I tried playing Fallout 4 and as usual my video card crashed, I am replacing this in a couple of weeks although not sure if I should stick with a 960 was thinking of getting the evga or going for a 970...Anyway I was running overdrive and when I looked at it my thermal margin was below 20 but was quickly jumping back up to 52 where it is jumping from between 37 and 55..

Also if I was to switch motherboards what would be a good board to go with?
