Hi, im generally good with computers, but when i tried to fix up a friends old machine, I ran across an issue.
Initially it would start entering windows, or startup repair and freeze before it got to anything.
I disconnected the HDD and booted from a usb linux and i am now able to get into linux, but only for like 15 minutes before it freezes with the cursor and everything still on the screen, but immobile.

A problem that occasionally happens is the computer will attempt to boot, aka lights on fans spinning etc but it will stop and restart several times until it finally shows bios. I have not figured out the cause to this. My first guess is a faulty motherboard

System specs: 4x2gb ddr3 ram
Motherboard:Edit: ASUS M4N78 Pro
CPU: amd phenomx4 940 3ghz
no hard drive currently installed
psu:ultra 500watt
GPU: Nvidia GT240

Things I have already tried:

Flashing Bios
Restoring Windows
Tested each ram stick in different slots.
Disconnected Hardrive and booted Linux from flashdrive
Re-seated CPU
Checked cables connected to motherboard.
Held the powersuply button for 30 seconds then plugged back in.

So i guess it has to be the MOBO or CPU?
given that these are from 2009, should i just scrap them and move on?
Sorry for such a broad question with little info, im just wondering if anybody had dealt with a similar problem.

Solution
well cpus rarely fail so oust that. i finger point at the mobo. then again psu second and third ram and forth if it boots to bios tell us does the bios freeze. lastly i am surprised there is no name or nothing could be found on the motherboard to piece together like text or set up to google and find out what model and make it is

Ill find the MOBO then get back to you. I was just being a little lazy and didnt wanna dig.

Edit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131382
thats the mobo.

Also, I dont recall it ever freezing in bios. Im gonna try the ram thing again.

Edit
I found the solution. i have discovered that while each ram stick works, my second slot seems to be broken. Right now i have only one ram stick in the first slot and the Pc is running continuously without any issue. Thanks and if anyone else has this issue, i suppose you should check the ram slots.
