SSD drives, price vs performance

I am pricing parts to "upgrade" my computer. My friend just built his with an SSD boot drive, which starts in FIVE SECONDS.

I plan on getting a SSD drive now too, beats the 15 minute I currently have.

Question is, is it worth the money to buy the Samsung 950 Pro?

or for my needs is a simple Samsung 850 Evo?

I want it to boot my computer FAST even after 3 years of use.
I would also use it for 3-4 games.

I'm wondering if, for my needs, is it stupid for me to buy the 950 Pro? Like if I purchased 128 gb of RAM, I'd be wasting my money lol. :)

I saw it's read/write speeds which are so fast, i'm just not sure if there is a point at which I as a consumer will even notice those speeds for what I plan on doing with it.

Yeah you wouldn't really need a 950 Pro that's a little overkill. You probably wouldn't even notice the difference between the Sandisk i listed above and the 950 Pro coming from the 15 minute boot time you're coming from.

In my part installing OS in SSD is not recommended, if I where you buy it with additional compatible memory to add it up in your computer. SSD is uses a NAND IC to stored data, this NAND IC is easy to damage by fluctuated current, high temperature, and dust buil-up, compare to the traditional HDD that uses platter to stored data. Its better use only SSD for the additional backup drive.

you know an ssd can come to means as a time saver, but money wise if you are going to use it for games a 4tb hdd is more practical when pared with a ssd boot drive. then again i got a 480gb ssd for my boot drive and a 120 gb for my pagefile as pagefile will kill any hard drive have never thanked myself enough for what i did. in your case i would buy one small hard drive enough for what you will need for boot and any programs and one huge drive for games

second of all the reason i got a 480gb boot was youtube watching or any video streaming will wear out sectors of data so i too that i account and 480gb should be enough to avid full on attack and 6 months later i still top avg. speeds for this drive and some more expensive dives in the read area.

Actually SSDs survive higher temperatures than HDDs, are not damaged by vibration and most shock damage because they do not have moving parts and therefore have no chance of mechanical failure. They will last longer than any HDD and ARE NOT affected by dust build up because they would be in an encasing much like an HDD. Also current fluctuations do not damage your data unless you fry the SSD with a much higher current which would also do the same to a HDD. You sir are spouting nonsense. Why the hell would you buy a SSD and then not install your OS on it and use it as a backup drive? I mean SSD as a backup driver really? :D

@crazyperson214: Just get the 850 Evo. Really great price/performance ratio. If you still want the 950 pro, keep in mind that you need a M.2 slot on your motherboard to put it in. Not many motherboards have these by now.
And your board does not have one, so you can't even use the 950 pro. :p

Its my opinion and experience, this drive is better for backup storage only. This storage is under observation by consumer that the manufacturers need to develop this storage for better use. Nand IC is same with flash IC same with USB drive that its easy to damage. You observe that in the future using this storage.

Source? Also you know what else causes data corruption? Mechanical failure in HDDs, shock and vibration on HDDs, and magnetic waves on HDDs. There is a higher chance that your whole HDD will fail than some of your data being corrupted on an SSD.

Please dispel those notions http://superuser.com/questions/919058/whats-the-technical-difference-between-a-flash-drive-and-an-ssd Technology has come a long way and SSD quality is much much better than the quality of a flimsy $8 USB. So please stop comparing the two. They use the same technology but SSD quality is significantly greater and eliminates most if not all the problems of Flash memory.

If that's your basis then we should be using Floppy Disks to store our data because it's the least corruptible according to your analogy.

No booth HDD Versions is good what I mention here is for OS system storage lasting, the platter is good and durable when it comes to performance. We need to inform people which is true, platter or NAND IC that needs to develop.

Did you read the thread I posted? SSD technology HAS developed and they've already SURPASSED HDDs in reliability AND speed.

Quoted: "On the one hand one finds MLC (Multi-level cell) which is a memory element capable of storing more than a single bit of information. Most MLC NAND flash memory has four possible states per cell (or even more with TLC), so it can store several bits of information per cell. This reduces the number of required transistors, so reducing size and manufacturing costs, while also reducing speed and increasing the possibility of errors.

On the other hand one finds SLC (single-level cell), where each cell can exist in one of two states, storing one bit of information per cell. This increases the access speed, while also increasing manufacturing costs and electricity usage.

An MLC cell is typically rated at 10,000 erase/write cycles, while an SLC cell might last 10 times that before failing.

Because of these differences, MLC is typically used in slower and cheaper media, accessed typically via USB. A good SSD will use SLC and be costlier, but faster, have a longer life-time and be typically accessed via SATA 2 or 3."

Ok I accept your opinion my friend but for me this HDD version as of now is not really good, its more improvement. like cloning and gettings data on the damage SSD. Lets consider this because its always happen that our HDD is damage and have a important data we need to recover. Compare to platter that we are well experience better compare to SSD. Did you encounter here questioning how to clone OS from Platter to SSD that no body answer it here. Try to answer it correctly that he can't clone it without error.

The original post was asking about SSDs so please stop trying to justify your HDD ideology. Yes indeed SSDs need to improve but they are already currently better than HDDs. Please stop you are cluttering this thread.

Admirable
SSDs nowadays are more reliable than mechanical disks. As for cloning, or recovering, an OS on one the process is exactly the same as with a mechanical disk. They are both just SATA storage devices.

To buy an SSD and then not install the OS on it would be perverse in the extreme.

I'm getting that I should probably just go with a regular SSD and shoot for a high read/write, but make sure it is good quality, which Samsung is imo. Also, even if this SSD does give out in 5 years, thats fine by me. :) All I will have on there is the OS and 4 MMOs. I have all my product keys and can just reinstall everything on a new device.

I am upgrading my system and the MoBo will have a single M2 slot, so even something not as extreme as the 950 pro would benefit my on time.

Now I am curious though, what applications would people need a 950 pro for with such fast read/write speeds?

Thanks for the responses as well everyone! :)
