Insane CPU temps.

So, very recently, I have built my first gaming computer. It runs well, haven't had too many problems with it so far, but one thing is the cpu temps. Whenever I play a game that is somewhat cpu intensive, it spikes up in the 90's°C, even in the 100°C. I'm using the stock cooler, since I wanted to wait a bit before buying water cooling. I reach 51°C on idle, which seems quite high for having literally nothing running. I will set the fan on higher speeds, but even then it seems weird having those temps.

(EDIT) Only 2 of the 4 pins were in properly, as I expected. 40ish°C on idle now. Thanks for the quick help!

Solution
That sounds like the cooler is not on right. Please ensure that all 4 pegs if you are on an Intel system are pressed fully down and locked(press from opposite corners together.).

If you are on AMD, make sure the licking lever is all the way down.

You may need to get some thermal paste and remove the heatsink clean the old stuff and reinstall it.

Normal operating temps are up to 70 degrees, specially on stock coolers.
