I just got my pc parts, i built the system on my MOBO box, it ran perfect! Until i downloaded a CPU temp software, the temps where terrible. I have hit 100 degrees while watching you-tube! I tighten the CPU cooler more, and the temps went down 5 degrees, it is so tigth now that i am afraid it might ruin the MOBO. IDK wtf to do, i didn't over use on thermal paste, maybe had to little. But still, how can a brand new cpu go to a 100 degrees with fan spinning at the fastest.

As i said i have a 4790K, 16 GB ddr3 hyper x memory, MSI z97i mobo. My cooler is the noctua NH-U9B

BIOS it says that it is 99 degrees Celsius. HWmonitor it goes between 70-100 degrees. (when its 70 degrees i have only HWmonitor running on my desktop) The second i go on chrome, or any other program it goes up to 90 degrees.

BTW, if the cpu is bad, do i get a refund from the store i ordered it from? I have the box, original cooler and everything.

Yes clean off all the old TIM if there is any left on the CPU die using alcohol. The stock cooler has preapplied paste. Use free version of Speccy to check temps.

My other rig (actually my wife's) has a i7 4790k using a Corsair Hydro Series H80 cooler. This cooler is about two years old.

Her i7 4790k idles around 25C and hits 55C under load. If you are hitting 100 while streaming - you have a messed up cooler, or your readings are wrong.

BTW, I used MX-4 thermal paste. It's great.

Thank you guys for helping me! I just uninstalled my cooler, I found out that it wasn't touching the CPU it self.... Online, and the store i ordered from both said that it supports i7 4790K or LGA 1150. F*** Noctua for giving me parts that doesn't work, and yes i did the manual 100% correctly. I am now running stock Intel cooler, and i will return the Nocuta for another try on another LGA 1150 cooler. My max cooler hight is 150mm, any ideas?

Anyways, thank you for helping me

It does support it, you are the one who is at fault.

Noctua is a hugely respected, top end cooler manufacturer. You have simply installed it wrong and therefore it's not cooling properly. I could already tell when you said you screwed it so tight you were worrieed it would break.

You NEVER use brute force in PC building and the golden rule is to stick exactly to the manual that came with the cooler.

Clean off the paste completely. remove everything you installed wrongly onto the mobo and start again, follo9wing the manual VERY precisely, following the EXACT orientation of the parts etc.

You will see how awesome noctua coolers are and how inexperienced and imopatient you simply were.

DasHotShot is right. Noctua is a good company and their coolers are top notch.

Don't get in a hurry and watch some YouTube videos on installing it. You could have a bad cooler because it is always possible to get a lemon from any company, but you may have also damaged it if you tried to install improperly. Slow down, take your time and use good TIM.

I used the manual, double checked and everything. BUT the heatsink wont connect to the CPU. It is a 3-5 mm gap. I am sure i did it right, 100%! The manual was red many times before install.

My bet is the brackets are wrongly orientated or the wrong backplate is attached or something along those lines. The frustrated sound of OC is so similar and reminds of my first build a long long time ago when simple small mistakes were made and once forced into the mind took a long time to get out of there again.

If in doubt, get a neutral person to look at it like a friend or sibling, from a fresh start (no bkacplate etc installed) and without telling them about your problem and see what happens.
