I'm currently building a new PC however I'm stuck on what CPU to buy. I have been looking into some of the AMD FX 8xxx range, specifically the 8370 and 8320. My GPU is a Radeon R9 380X and the PC will be used for gaming in high resolutions and FPS.
Can anyone help me choose,
Thank You,
Callum

I love AMD, but it is now getting difficult to recommend it. You can get a better system with i5, or even the i3 6100 overclocked. Unless you live near a MicroCenter, then AMD still has a better performance-to-price ratio. If you just like AMD more, then I am not going to argue against that. I try to support AMD in areas where it is rationally justifiable.

In terms of gaming, don't with the Fx 8xxx series. The Fx 6300 overclocked will performance just as well as the Fx-8xxx but at a lower cost.

Here is the cheapest quality build I could find for AMD. That mobo and PSU cannot be cheaped out.

Do you plan to overclock? If so, you could potentially OC an 8320 to match an 8370, because they are otherwise the same chip. The higher tier chips may be binned better though, so you may not be able to match their OCed performance with an OCed 8320, but I imagine you could come close.

I am not going to lie, it is a bit pricey. I have same build with the r9 290 and build it for $500. At $650, intel can be a pretty good option.

If you're gaming in 1080p, then this will be fine. 60ish fps on high-ultra presets on most games. It will struggle in 1440p.

With Skylake now available, there is absolutely no question in my mind that a new build should be Skylake.
a. Prices for cpu, z170 motherboard and ddr4 ram are almost precisely the same.
b. skylake has an estimated 5-10% performance improvement per clock over haswell.
c. 14nm runs cooler, you get a decent overclock without the need for exotic cooling.
d. The Z170 chipset permits the use of much faster ssd devices on the horizon. Samsung 950 pro for example:

e. skylake can be upgraded in the future to kaby lake.

Get a Z170 board with skylake core i3 and fast DDR 4 ram 2666 mhz or above. This will be in budget and as a surprise you can bclk the core i3 to 4.4 or 4.6 ghz and at those clocks the cpu beats stock performance of core i5 2500K, fx 8350 and everything below by a fair margin. Which litreally means u can run all games on 60 fps and even the r9 380x in crossfire mode wont bottleneck it.

This will help u get the latest intel chip so u will get good resale value in future. Secondly ur rig will be more future proof, you can add a core i7 or core i5 later on. Plus cpu supporting the z170 board will be in abundance in the market till 2018-19, since its quite new.

Don't get me wrong on this the fx are great cpu and still gets u 60 fps in most games. I am myself using fx 8320 (4.4 Ghz oc), they are now getting aged plus their pricing though less were great a year back but not now, due to competition.
