Use mobile Core 2 Duo instead of Desktop Core 2 Duo?

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a USFF core 2 duo pc for €40 to use as a media center. I want to use ubuntu with Kodi or something like that. Just for HD playback.

It comes with a 3Ghz Core 2 Duo E8400 in an LGA775 socket, TDP 65 Watt.

I was wondering if I can use a mobile core 2 duo CPU to reduce power consumption. The desktop CPU's all have a TDP of 65 Watt or more, but the mobile ones go much lower.

Any idea if this platform supports these cpus?

This is the PC:

The board uses the Intel Q45 Express Chipset and the manual mentions this: "Processor in FC-LGA8 package in LGA775 socket"

For example, the T9400 seems to be readily available and only uses 35 Watt.

Regards,
K.

I see,

Would this be a limitation by the chipset or hardware?

Or is it the form factor? I noticed the mobile ones don't have a heat spreader.

THX!

^^Yep. Completely different chipset designs even though they share the same common core name between mobile and desktop. Mobile chips have different architecture than their big brother desktop variants for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is needing to be more efficient.

Actually if you underclock a CPU you can manually reduce the voltage needed below that which it was set in spec by the manufacturer. I used to play around with underclocking and minimum Vcore settings just for fun.....but this was back in the days before EIST "smart" chips.
