After being stuck on a laptop with a broken graphics card for the longest time, an upgrade is in order. I'm not that big on games anymore, I'd mostly be playing my steam backlog (most demanding game in there: Skyrim), maybe play some XCOM or Battlefield, otherwise not really interested in graphically demanding AAA titles.

The main use would be video playback, for which I have somewhat high expectations, I want to be able to run madVR at reasonable settings and if possible some frame doubling/60fps codec (the requirements of which I am unsure of).

I would also be upgrading to a good IPS monitor between 24" and 28" inches, I have heard generally good things about BenQ and Acer and while Tom's Hardware often praises AOC displays, they seem to be somewhat hit or miss.

As for storage, a friend has recommended Toshiba but didn't name a specific model, in the 3TB range Seagate seems to be very popular yet I constantly hear about hard drive failures. I am currently leaning towards WD red 3TB despite not using NAS, which they are specialized for, they seem like a good choice.

I was thinking of something along these lines: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/PxXPRB though ideally I would like to still fit the monitor and stay under $1000, I think an i3 might suffice, but I'm not terribly well informed on Skylake in general.

You should always pick SS over anything. because they oem almost 95% of all the psu. or maybe im just a fanboy of SS too :D on my first rig, i used a s12ii 520w. im still using it 2 builds later.

Yes, an i3 will be enough to play your games at 1080p at excellent framrates if skyrim is your most demanding game. Your build is already enough because you already have the basic idea of what to get, the rest is just your preference. the only thing that i would advise to change is maybe spend 10 more dollars on the psu and get something like the evga 500b 500w 80+ bronze to support your build.

As for the monitors, go with what's gonna look good in your eyes. BenQ and AOC are really good monitors and are usually used in Esports and competitive gaming specially around south east asia. Since your GPU wont allow it, you probably dont need anything more than a 60hz refresh rate on your monitor. If you need the fast response time, go for TN panels. If you want the vibrant colors with wide viewing angles, go for IPS. and the last thing that you would consider, its shallow but its really the most thing people look for in a monitor, is the aesthetics. Simply, just go with the monitor that looks good to you.

Most of the parts I chose were placeholders approximately in the range I was looking at, After your recommendations I looked into it and the i3-6100 seems to be more than enough for my needs, the EVGA seems to have excellent reviews and is cheaper than many lower wattage PSUs I have found so I have also changed to that. Thanks again for the help

I was going for something anywhere between a gtx 730 up to a 960, but I think I will stick with the 950, it seems to be so close to the 960 in almost all tests for a lower price.
I'll still see if I find a cheaper MoBo, but this one comes well recommended and is probably a safe pick. Unless someone tells me otherwise, I will also stick with the WD Reds for storage

An i3 6100 and a 950 should be good for your needs.

A seasonic 430W should have the wattage for the whole build, and has high quality components that should last you a long while.

Glad to be of assistane. the gtx 950 is really sitting comfortably at a bang for the buck price with good gaming performance. not the best, but good nonetheless. you wont regret getting over anything within its price give or take 30$.

i can vouch for hitachi desktar hdd's @ 7200 rpm, im just not sure if they have 3 tb as i only have the 1 gb, on an amd apu rig running for 2 years already. i can also vouch for a seagate barracuda that's also 7200 rpm i have the 2TB variant running for over a year without problems.

but im a WD fanboy so.... yeah :D

Where I happen to live, the Seasonic is the same price as the EVGA, so even if it's a lot of headroom, I'll stick with that.. It scored excellently at Jonnyguru's tests, which seem to be very thorough.
