Hello all

A little history, i have just updated my old GeForce 460 and Ezzo 1600x1200 display to a XFX R9 390 DD & UHD Samsung LCD Panel, but my current CPU is not upto it, so the question is ...

What should i replace my i7 920 CPU & X58 Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 sys brd with?

I am not after the best bleeding edge performance, but o/c will probably happen, as i have been maximising CPU performance since and old Intel 286SX @12MHz was updated with a math co processor 287 that ran at 16MHz & i don't see why i should stop now!

I will be after the best value for £££!
I do want an M2 slot that will take a Samsung 512GB card to go with my 1TB 740 SSD, but dual video cards nar not my thing, but if i can play a few games @ 1440 that would be very nice!

Thoughts and considerations most welcome!

Cheers

Dave

PS My PSU is a 750 watt so bare that in mind.

An overclocked i7 920 should have plenty beans to run a 390, they were great CPU's. But a worthy upgrade and the best bang for the buck, would be an i5 Skylake. The locked processors are overclockable on Z170 boards, making them a relative bargain. The Z170 boards have M.2 slots and NVMe compatibility to run drives like the Samsung 950 Pro. They also have good audio.

Bad Actor - this was a great reply - I am now 8 months later in the same situation with a 5 year old Asus X58 and a I7 950 3.07 Mhz - what would you now suggest as a good alternative build and components ?

Thank you

A little has changed since then. Intel has tried to stop overclocking locked processors on the Z170 boards. While some can still be overclocked this way, I am not totally sure which boards can and can't. This leaves a couple of options for you. Asrock has their Hyper Series motherboards which allow bclck overclocking without the need for a special Bios, or, you can go to the unlocked 6600K and a Z170 board. The difference in cost isn't that great since the Hyper Series boards are relatively expensive and the price of Z170 boards has fallen. Based on that, I would recommend the following:
