So I've had this issue for quite some time. Years actually.

I just never really thought it was problematic. I've never experienced shut downs or anything while gaming or rendering etc... The card just gets really really REALLY loud for seconds then stops, then later repeats. It's always been this way.

The issue is, my fans on my gpu don't spin unless the card starts to load and over heat. I wan't the fans to be spinning all the time obviously.

I used after burner to manually set a fan speed but it only works when i set the speed extremely high like 85-100. if i set it to anything under they will not spin. Idk what to do.

Please help?

Sounds like the fans are being stopped from spinning up, which is usually due to dust/gunk accumulating on the fan spindle itself. The fans should be very easy to spin by hand or even by blowing on the fan itself. If there is any resistance or the fans feel stiff to turn then that is your problem. Your GPU will be having to push the full voltage in order to get the fans to spin up and overcome that resistance (which is the same thing that afterburner does at 100% on your fan profile)

I'd be tempted to remove your card, do the checks above and if I'm correct, then its a matter of either taking the fan assembly apart and cleaning them up or if not it would suggest the issue has always been present (manufacturing fault?) and your stuck with it.

Your GPU temps must be horrendous if the fans don't spin at all, I'm surprised the card has lasted this long to be honest.

Thank you for reply. I'll try cleaning it all up and taking it out tomorrow... It is quite dusty. But I've cleaned them before. The issue has been present a long time. The fans are really high on start up. Other wise, usually not on unless it over heats. Sometimes one fan is spinning slowly. But usually both are at rest.. I'll try cleaning it thoroughly tomorrow, make sure all the plugs are thoroughly plugged too.

I just don't see it being a true fault...The fans work clearly. I'll get back to you after I clean. Ty

Also, the gpu temp gets under even 40 at idle.

I set the fan speed to ninety at they turn on instantly so I know they work... I guess it's possible the dust accumulated could be enough to suppress the movement.

Remember, the fans should spin by hand with absolutely no (or minimal) resistance, and you should even be able to blow across them and have them spinning, anything else suggests a problem.

also, in terms of them spinning up to 100% at boot up, that is completely normal, however they should then settle down to run at your GPU drivers pre-determined level, so for example AMD's Crimson GPU driver has its auto setting at 20%.

Because this issue has been a problem such a long time, if this cleaning and re plugging doesn't resolve the problem - would you suggest uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling. How would I proceed to do so? That is, finding and uninstalling any and all drivers

What cards are they? Make? Model? Some will always be a bit noisier than others due to the design of the HSF and yours might not be the quietest ones to begin with, or they might be who knows? :spamafote:

MSI Afterburner allows you to manually be in charge of your GPU fan, when I game and OC my GPU, I personally don't use "auto" fan I manually set it to the loudest I'm willing to tolerate while gaming which is usually higher than what auto does (in normal cases unlike yours) which allows for the best performing GPU.

I've cleaned my gpu to the best of my ability.
They are MSI gtx 670.

The fans still only work if i set them to 90% or if gpu over heats.

@sinister - by blowing do u mean a light blow or a pretty strong one? When i blow with some strong air behind it, the fans do move for a few seconds then come to a stop. This is me blowing directly above them with power. Blowing "across" or "parallel" to the fans do not move them as much.
