Hello
I'll start with my laptop and my OS:
Alienware m14x r2 with W7 64 bit
I have all my drivers up to date, this laptop came with W8.1 and there audio in worked, on W7 is has never worked through the jack for mic or combo. In the mic jack, Windows detects the mic (on either my headset or my ear plugs), but the sound bar only moves when I tap the area of the mic. In the combo jack there is only sound output, it does not recognize any mic at all. I don't know why the combo jack is behaving like that. My audio tips have four sections, which is something normal to have.
I know that the mic in is enabled, again taps to the mic move the sound bar, but my voice is not picked up. The in built laptop mic works and when I connect my headset via USB audio in and out both work. What could the problem be?
Any help would be welcome, and I should add that I have researched this quite a bit and tried various suggestions made to others already.

Could you please state your headsets make and model? If you're dealing with a headset that is USB powered then most often it will require a software/application installation to get things moving along. In sound manager have you made sure your volume for the mic is ramped up? You could try a demo session with a friend on skype and see if your voice is picked up by the mic and that your listener can hear you. Did this issue pop up at any time when you were on Windows 8.1 while on the same audio equipment? On a side note is your BIOS up to date?

Regarding the headset, the central combo port should accept a 3 ringed 3.5mm jack while the two ports on its side need a 2 ringed and a single ringed jack in it's port. [bFurther reading[/b].
