Greetings fellas, this is my first time here asking for help as I am totally lost here with this problem.

I was using my PC normally since I've built it in July 2014 and suddenly he seemed to die yesterday, but not quite, and here is the description...

I was having problems using the Internet over Windows 10 with slow connectivity or limited/null connectivity over wifi and decided to format the PC. Everything was ok until I shut it off...

Suddenly the PC refused to start, no lights, no fan spin, nothing! I unplugged everything from, the GPU to the 24 and 12 pins, front panel pins and wires and put it back on... The PC worked until I shut it off again.

This time I repeated all the procedures above with no success at all. The PSU, a corsair AX850 is working properly as I can jump start it with a paper clip. Worked on the PC for a few hours with no success. I have an USB headset with a power led that is normally ON all the time, and it is still light up, so I guess the motherboard is getting power from the PSU. If I turn off the PSU switch or unplug it the led goes Off.

I even tried to short start the PC with a screwdriver touching the power switch pins on the motherboard front panel pins.

After losing all my hopes I've let it there... Unplugged the power cord and there the PC there for a few hours, and for my surprise, when I was resigned and giving up I plugged all back and the PC worked... Booted, logged to Windows and the Internet and was fine. It was late, almost midnight and I shut it off to give another test and ... Didn't work, again! No life signal except the power led on the USB headset.

Conclusions so far:

The motherboard is not dead as the PC worked, started and booted properly after some hours unplugged
The PSU is fine as well as I can jump start it, the fans spin, DVD drive works (open/closes)

Questions:
Can it be a short circuit related to the case I've installed my system? Would it be fixed by changing the cables leading the case front panel to the board pins? Or I need a new case?
The USB headset power led ON is a signal the board is fine or no relation at all?

Suggestions? What can I do?

This kind of problem is a pain in the #$^%$# to find.

I don't think it is a short, unless it also has a thermal component where something moves as it cools.

You have two choices, throw money at the problem by replacing things until the problem goes away, or work systematically to track the problem down.

You gave made some good moves so far.

The best way to try and locate the problem is to strip the system down to the absolute minimum (one RAM stick, no GPU, no headsets or anything), one disk drive, and test it thoroughly and see what part causes the problem to occur. If you have a friend who will help, you can swap parts into another system to test there.

Yes my friend, it is a real pain. It had happened before, exactly 3 months ago and I solved with the first solution I've tried yesterday.

I've opened a ticket to corsair and see what will happen next, probably a PSU RMA and I'm also requesting a motherboard RMA as they are all in warranty.

Someone told me it could be a power supply issue, even if it starts while doing the paper clip test, do you believe so?

It could be an intermittent problem with anything. (A faulty capacitor or heatsink inside could produce these symptoms, but so could a lot of other things). It cold be a bad connector too. There's so many possibilities. I'd certainly test by swapping out the PSU at some point during the testing process.

A light or a fan running from one of the unused power leads and external, would give you an idea of what is going on.

If it were easy, anyone could do it :)

I´m out of home working all day long and I want to ask you something: in your opinion, would be safe to try and hit the power button once more tonite when I get home?

I´ve already contacted Corsair and Gigabyte, PSU and mobo manufacturers and will try to RMA my items. I'm not from the US, I live in Brazil and I'm not sure that gigabyte's warranty policy covers my case.

update on the case...

I've just called gigabyte's support and they told me some procedures I might try at home, saying that if there is a BIOS problem the computer might seen dead as it is looking now, but, that I should really investigate the power supply.

I'll request a PSU RMA from Corsair imediately

as of now:

Update:

I was out of home all day working. When I got home the PC turned on. Used for a few moments and after shutting it off it refused to turn on again, looking dead.

Let the machine sit for two hours while I was watching my kids and again it turned on (i'm using it right now). No apparent problems, performance is ok, temperatures also. I'm pretty sure now the problem is within the PSU.

Well, I don't have any spare parts, but I guess Corsair considered my PSU to be defective as it is really odd that the pc turns on if cold (off for a few hours) and it can't start if it has been in use for a few moments or hours.

The thing is that I'll have to pay a considerable amount to ship my faulty PSU to the US, specifically now when $1 is like 4 of our money

Well, there is nothing else to do besides sending Corsair my PSU back, the strange and odd thing is that if the computer is off all day long I can turn it on at night (or after a few hours off) and I use like nothing happened, but, if I shut it down for some reason after using it I can turn it on again cause it seems totally dead!

The question is, on the PSU or the mobo? I guess on the PSU since mobo's temps are relatively low with my current cooling.
