Hello everyone,

I am interested in buying the following PC and I was wondering whether you can advise me regarding the CPU:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=201501294797

My current PC is a Pentium 4 at 2.8ghz which will be scrapped. That seller is selling a computer with 12Ghz CPU. Can somebody tell me whether it is a good purchase? Is it going to be 4 times faster than my 2.8ghz computer or more?

Also, can you recommend me a process or software to wipe my hard drive securely?

The CPU is not 12Ghz, it is a quad core with each core running at 3Ghz. A 12Ghz CPU clock is impossible, I believe the world record overclock is around 8Ghz. The price seems to be reasonable, however you need at least 8GB of RAM to game with, and there is no mention of what motherboard, psu, brand name of RAM, or even what model number Xeon processor was used. I would say for the asking price that they have bottom of the barrel parts (other than a very good processor) and you have no video card. I would say its probable that you will be spending a lot of money upgrading this computer when you actually want to do taxing things with it (like gaming). You will need a video card, you will probably have to upgrade the psu, RAM, and maybe even the motherboard depending on what kind of bargain bottom of the barrel parts were used. You do however get at least the processor, case and Windows 10 (that won't need to be upgraded) for $268.96 and may be able to use some of the parts (if they are not too cheap).

I would say its a gamble as you don't know what parts were used in this build. You may be better off just ordering all the parts you want and building a rig like this yourself (that way your not wasting any money buying cheap parts that may only last 6 months).

Thank you for this. I will see whether I can build a PC myself. In case I can't, could you suggest me something reasonably cheap but a good quality build? I don't want to go ahead and get something like the above '12ghz' computer, thinking I bought something good, but in reality buy a 3ghz PC :)

The ad states: VERY FAST AND ROBUST SERVER CPU RUNS AT A MASSIVE 12GHz WHEN CORES ARE IN SERIES CONFIGURATION.

That statement makes no sense at all. They also say you are getting MS Office with this PC. The value of all this software (Win10 and MS Office) as well as everything else makes me smell a rat (IMO). Your choice but be careful is all I'm saying.

But as already started, the CPU does not run at 12GHz. 4 cores that each run at 3GHz does not equal 12Ghz. That is like saying four cars driving up the motorway at 70mph means one car is doing 280mph!!!

Your best bet is to go to http://pcpartpicker.com/ and just start playing around with configurations. You don't actually have to buy your rig from them, but you can get a good idea of what the build will be and what it will cost (you can even order each part individually from different sites so you get the best price on each part). You will also know exactly what parts were used from the ground up.

When you get a configuration that you are happy with or very interested in post it here and we can tell you if it all looks good or if a part should be substituted.

I agree, and saying this is an online purchase with an individual seller you may get into pirated software. I don't see any other way someone could offer Windows 10 and MS Office (full version) with a Xeon build if its not pirated. The simple fact that they are trying hard to be misleading with posting it as a 12Ghz machine speaks volumes.

IF you need help to get a new pc, here a lot of people it will help you, but you must said how money will you like to spent, as what is your goal with your pc, if it' s gaming like hardcore or casual gaming. So that way they can suggest some builds according your goals.
