Does the chipset have to be the same when upgrading a motherboard ? I have an h87 chipset now, Do I have to get new motherboard with the same ?

Solution
H87 lga 1150 board is fine for that CPU so no need to upgrade. Any supporting chipset will work with the CPU. If you do not get exactly the same you may have OS license issues depending on which windows version you have.

If you are using a h-87 now and looking for a different motherboard for the same CPU. It does not need to be the same chipset. You can get z-97 ( the best ) h-97, z-87, h-87 all the way down to b-85 and h-81 ( the cheapest )
If you can get a z-97 board

We are talking about mobo for i7 4770? If so then no, you don't need the same chipset but there is only a number of limited chipsets which supports Haswell , B85, H87, H97, Z87, Z97, Q87, H81.... just keep in mind that those older chipsets and mobos might require BIOS upgrade to boot with that CPU.
