AMD vs Nvidia

Solution
I would say it depends on intended usage. If you're looking at gaming, I'd lean towards NVidia. If looking for videos/image clarity, I'd lean towards AMD.

Generally speaking Nvidea has better drivers and lower power consumption and AMD is usually cheaper.

With regards to actual performance you usually do comparisons by price brackets and it will vary from bracket to bracket on what card is the best.

"Go with nvidia unless some serious limited budget issues involved"

I would actually disagree with this, as it really depends on what cards you are considering. For example for similar price you can get a Nvidea GTX 960 or an AMD R9 380. In this instance the 380 will outperform the 960 when it comes to gaming (well in most games) and it is slightly cheaper.

-Nvidia has better software but AMD is slowly catching up
-AMD cards run hotter and usually need beefier PSUs but are also cheaper
-AMD usually wins in middle class while Nvidia wrecks AMD at high end and enthusiast cards
-Nvidia cards have more room for overclocking due to lower power consumption and less heat

That's some general stuff, but it's mostly different on a case-by-case basis. It would help if you gave us some specific cards to compare.

This time last year I would say Nvidia for sure but right now I can't say that for sure. It depends on the price range but I will say I had a GTX 970 that I traded away for a R9 390 and absolutely love it. That is one case where AMD is actually better contrary to early reports the 390 was a rebadged 290X which is the complete opposite. Also if adaptive sync is something that needs to be considered since FreeSync is quickly becoming the standard while GSync will cost you a pretty penny. I will close by saying this, my 390 consumes less power under load than my 970 did, it runs cooler under load and it outperforms it in 70% of the games. Anyone that tells you otherwise has never physically used one. Trust me I am a long time Nvidia user. Stay away from the AMD 200 series if you do go that route get 300 series.

Yeah I think you should have posted this back in early 2015 because most of what you claim isn't the case anymore.

I would only get an AMD gpu or cpu if you are getting a budget build. I got my current PC for $450 and can run Witcher 3, Black Ops 3, MGSV, you name it. But boy if I had the chance, I'd definitely save up more money for an i5 and a GTX 980. Go for nVidia for game performance, always, and AMD if you're on a tight budget.

This is the best advice you will hear on this thread.

If you are going to buy a GPU follow these steps:

1. Set your maximum budget.
2. Outline the features that are important to you,.
3. Check all the cards around the top of your budget and check if the y have the necessary features.
4. Once you have a list check the reviews for each card.
5. Post on forums for advice.
6. Make your purchase.

Some people are saying only buy NVidea unless you are on a budget, which simply is not true. The reason I say that is that there are a number of price brackets where AMD is the best option and this is true even at high end.

AMD
Generally Better price per performance ratios
Less power Efficient
Older cards normally runs hotter, the newer ones I noticed runs similarly to the Nvidia cards now
Drivers are usually slower to update

Nvidia
Better performance, but will generally be more expensive
Alot more power efficient, most of their cards just need 500w until you get to the GTX 980s and up.
Drivers updates often, but it always turn off SLI which i find annoying

But I have noticed that the two companies are starting to even out alot more.
