Hi guys,

I am very excited about the new Rise of the Tomb Raider, which I was waiting for about 2 years. A few weeks ago the minimum system requirements have been revealed and my PC doesn't meet those, mainly the CPU.

I have an old AMD Athlon II X2 250 (2 Core 3,0GHz) CPU on a Biostar NF520D3 MOBO. Currently I'm short on money so I decided about getting a AMD Phenom II X4 955 as a temporary solution before buying a completely new CPU + MOBO.

This processor is the last which is shown on the Biostar website of this motherboard as compatible with it.

So here is just a few questions I really hope some of you could help me with:
1. Will Rise of the Tomb Raider work normally on this CPU? Will it work at all?
2. This CPU needs 95 Watts and the maximum amout of Watts my MOBO can support the CPU with is also 95 Watts. Will the CPU still work safely although it needs the maximum energy?
3. Will this new CPU bottleneck my GTX 660 just as the old did?
4. Does the fan have pre-installed cooling paste?

I would be very happy if you could answer the questions :)
Thanks in the future.

1: Yes, the PII should be a significant upgrade, at least in this game, less so in games that only use two (or even one) core, though.

2: Yes, it should run just fine, but e sure to update the motherboard BIOS before installing the new CPU.

3: Depends on game and settings but with a higher clockrate the bottleneck will be reduced across the board and reduced further in more modern titles that can use all 4 cores.

4: Only if you can find a new one but that's very unlikely, although some E-bay/craiglist sellers may still hold unused stock. Personally, I'd consider getting a decent CPU cooler as well, the reference AMD coolers are noisy and run hot, and you can transfer it over into the new MB/CPU later on.

Bear in mind that:
You may...

If you could find this processor new in box (nearly impossible) yes the stock fan will have cooling paste on it.

TBH you will JUST ABOUT reach the minimum requirements to run on the lowest settings. For me I'd rather wait till I build a new PC and enjoy it in its full graphical and performance glory. Its going to run and look like crap. And you're spending money on a processor you're going to get rid of.

Bear in mind that:
You may need to purchase a new Windows license for the new CPU/MB, some OEM (builder) licences seem to transfer, others will not, retail licences will transfer.
Depending on the modules installed it may be a good idea to upgrade the memory as well.

Hey I realize this thread is a little bit old, but I wanted to let the OP know that I am playing this game on my Phenom II x4 955 BE

I am overclocked to 4.0GHz and my GPU is the GTX 970. The game chose High settings for me and it looks great and plays pretty good. There are small hiccups here and there though.
