possible to stream pc to laptop via ethernet only? (no modem or router)

so i have a gaming pc with a wireless card so the ethernet port is free, now i dont have internet because i just use my mobile hotspot. so i cant just a modem or router. i was hoping i can just buy a long ethernet cable and connect to directly from the port on my tower, to the port on my laptop. is this possible? also could this work with a USB cable or do i need a router for this to work?

That's because Internet sharing provides DHCP service. To make this work wo hotspot, just give the machines static IPs.

hello i tried your method and it doesnt work. only works when the hotspot is on. anyway to make it work with just the ethernet plugged in on both computers? do i need a crossover ethernet cable for this to work?
