I'm trying to find a budget-friendly GPU for my friend and I came up with these comparisons. He uses his computer primarily for gaming, if not only gaming. In terms of games he plays mostly League of Legends, Tera, and Blade & Soul. His specs are:

CPU: i5 3570k @ 3.40GHz
GPU: Sapphire 7870 2GB
PSU: Rosewill 650W Bronze
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V-Pro
RAM: Ballistic 1x8GB

The main difference from the cards I see are Core Clock, Memory Interface and Memory Size. All of these I need some more clarification on as the only thing I (sorta) know about Core Clocks is that it affects the FPS on games and that some games require more memory specs.

For the GTX 960:

Firstly, getting the 4 GB version is a waste of money unless you are going to have a ton of mods on for example skyrim. This is because on a 1080P monitor, it never uses anywhere near 4 GB, even 3 GB, even on demanding titles.

As you can see by the benchmarks you can find by a quick google/youtube search the 2 GB vs 4 GB have next to no fps difference in 1080P.

For The R9 390:

The R9 380 is slightly better than the GTX 960 when it comes to raw fps performance in modern titles.

Thus, the R9 380X is the clear winner here. Excellent price point, great performance for the price. Additionally, XFX is an outstanding manufacturer for AMD cards.

However, Nvidia cards are slightly more power effecient and have additional software like shadowplay.

The power efficiency really is not a huge issue, it will barely affect your power bill, maybe an additional dollar or two per month and the PSU he has can absolutely handle the R9 380X.

Well the order of performance from best to worst is:

R9 380X
R9 380
GTX 960

The 380X is the only one that you could justify being a decent enough upgrade to be worth upgrading. The other 2 would still be upgrades, but too small to bother with IMO.

You can compare the clock speeds on two cards with the same chip but you cant for example compare the clock speed on a GTX 970 vs R9 390.

It's comparing apples to oranges.

Does Shadowplay cause any performance issues? Also I'm curious but how did you come with the conclusion that the 380x give more "raw fps performance"? I don't mean to shoot you down with your thoughts, just want to know what justifies it so I know for future reference. :)

Shadowplay does not cause any performance issues. It's an amazing software that does an amazing job at recording.

The r9 380X is simply a better GPU in all aspects. It's simply a slightly higher end model compared to the R9 380 and the GTX 960. You can google/youtube benchmarks if you would like.
