so is i3 4160 vs i3 4170 both the same, from reading all the specs all i see different is that i3 4160 has a intel smart cache(whatever) that may mean, Should i just go for the cheaper one, or is there is one clear winner between the two?

Honestly neither. You will be looking for an upgrade way too quickly to justify the price of either of those. You will be better off forking out the extra 50-100 for a i5 depending on which one you pick.

well the 100mhz clock speed i3 4170 makes it barely faster. I would go with the an i5-4960 or a i5- 6400 if you are planning on playing multiplayer maps two cores is not going to be enough you need four cores to have smooth gameplay on a multiplayer map like battlefield 4. The extra cores help the cpu keep up with the gpu while the cpu handles the physics.

ALL GAMES COMING OUT WILL ONLY SUPPORT A QUADCORE CPU MINIMUM UNLESS YOU PATCH THEM.

The 4xxx and 6xxx are both a considerable amount more expensive than the i3. There are cheaper i5 CPUs around that are good but if you can afford it I personally recommend the 4670k if you can get a good deal.

Plus the ability to oc on the future.
