Are Macs a niche brand?

So I was looking at a new laptop recently and was considering a mac. I ended up going a different direction but was wondering if macs are more of a niche brand. Seems like you're paying a premium for a piece of hardware that is best for video/photo editing or design professions. Not saying it's the best for that application, but that that's what it's primarily used for. Seems like a lot of money to spend on something if someone just wanted to use it for daily use.

The only difference between a mac and a similarly priced PC is the OS. If you are used to using windows switching to OSX may take some getting used to and vice versa. Otherwise macs are just PCs built with top tier components. Although if you plan do do some gaming I would go with a Windows based system since there is more selection of different hardware configurations and Apple tends to not put very powerful GPUs in their mac laptops.

If it was just the performance of the machine, yes.

But these days with iphones being rather popular phones you might choose for them for integration of electronic devices.

It used to be an option because it would simply "run", whereas Windows would require some basic computer knowledge, but with W10 (W8 already probably) I don't think that's still a noticeable difference.

And then there's Fashion, mac used to charg extra for design (well, they had design and cost more, the two may not be correlated), but there's plenty of designer cases for desktops and latops as well.

The difference between Apple and most Windows OEM's is Apple has a premium price and don't make cheap computers whereas most Windows OEM make lowe proced machines. Apple's components are more uniform across the brand because they have less models and that helps with quality. The bottom line is you buy a $ 1500 Windows machine it will be comparable to an Apple machine. The difference is Apple doesn't make a $500 machine with 500 dollar components. Apple is know for their batteries and the trackpad in laptops. Apples are used alot in the media as you see tons of Apples in the crowd at Microsoft Products announcements. Window dominates in business software.
