No sound on my new HP Desktop

I have a red X on the volume button on the bottom right corner of the screen and when I go to change it, I get an error saying:

The peripheral does not appear to be plugged in. Check the connection. Proceed to next step to finish.

What does this even mean???? I need Sound.....
 
Solution
If it's truly a new HP desktop, contact your HP tech support. Part of the price you paid for a new computer is for customer support. They can walk you through it.
