Hello everyone,

I am having an experience of low FPS and low performance where I feel like I cannot maximize the performance on my graphics card, and I feel like I could do much better considering the price tag on my graphics card.

My Specs:
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth 990FX 2.0
Memory: 16GB
CPU: AMD FX8350 + Corsair H55 Watercooler
PSU: EVGA 750W Bronze
GPU: Asus Geforce GTX 970 4GB OC 2.0
OS: Win 10 Pro

I keep getting around 100-170 FPS on League of Legends (I got that same FPS on my AMD Sapphire R7 265+).
And also I only get 45 FPS on Planetside 2 on Ultra.
(these are the main games I play).

Everything is up to date and everything is on factory clocks. I feel like I could overclock but I don't feel like I should have to. Please help team.

Your CPU is holding you back, despite being a very good FX processor, it's still slower than an intel i5-4690k. FX processors are just too old and too slow to make full use of the 970 except on games that have low CPU usage.

It is unrelated to your GPU, it has plenty of power in reserve.

See tom's CPU tier list, their top category is just anything above AMD's best CPUs. (This is quite a range of products, and the i5-3550 is much slower than the i7-6700k).

Do frames is RTS' really matter? Anything over 60 frames in a RTS isn't going to provide an benefit like first person shooters. You also didn't say what setting your playing the games on and you didn't include the resolution. (EG High @ 1080).

As for Planet Side 2, that's a pretty CPU intense game. 45 frames may be a little low but as for LoL, I'm not going to comment on that one because you're just looking for a false hope. Don't look for frames, look for enjoyable performance.

So, to fix my problem, I would have to change my CPU?

My resolution is Full HD. 1920x1080.
I have tried, and used to have it at 4.3 GHZ but I didn't think I need to that.

It is a possibility that your CPU is holding you back in planetside, because there is a lot going on at once in that game. In lol that seems like about the right amount of frames, however I am also held back by an AMD A10-7850K APU so I may not know the "right" amount of frames you should be getting. Intel is almost always faster than amd, however you should be fine in most cases, my suggestion is bump settings down a tad on planetside 2 or swap mobo and cpu.

So the best thing for me would go with intel? Even if I got a newer AMD cpu?

If you absolutely NEED better performance in games like planet side only, then yes. However it's fine for now and other games that aren't as cpu intensive are already getting top(ish) fps like in lol.Anything above that is just wishful thinking with a 970.

So is the 970 not as good as i thought?

the 970 is great actually, its your cpu holding you back on those games

most online games only use 1 - 2 cores, combined with the very low per core performance of the 8350 = low fps because the cpu cant keep up

It's a great card, and the best bang for your buck. You can't however expect upwards of 200fps in all games. As far as planet side goes it's your cpu. Also anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

I just wish I knew that before I went with AMD. I chose it at first for budget, didn't know it would hold me back. As for being a computer builder enthusiast it is kind of disappointing for me to not be able to run a game on ultra, specially when I can, but I'm bottlenecking my performance. This build is about 2 years old (other than the GPU), so I might have to go for a revamp soon.

I feel ya there, my uncle built my PC, he didn't know much and went amd in both apu and gpu, the dual graphics didn't even work. I just got my 970, going to upgrade my cpu next.

The build is 2 years old. However you're using soon to be 4 year old technology that wasn't as powerful as Intel's chips at the time (Ivy Bridge CPUs). When you build a gaming PC, you have to think of it as an investment. Building a PC based on a strict budget is going to have it's draw backs. As for Ultra, don't get caught up on this. The moment you bought those components, it was already obsolete and performance was going to decrease overtime. This is true with any build. If you want Ultra all the time, you're looking at spending lots of money rather frequently just because newer AAA games are going to be more resource demanding.

That is very true my friend. I was a noob back then when building this PC and did not realize that the parts I was buying was already that old. I did compare the FX8350 to the current intels at the time, and for the price point the AMD was much better for me. But now I'm an old man in the computer era as far as my computer parts. My only drag is that I will have to switch my MOBO and CPU which can range from 500-800$ to do that. So I will compromise for now and see how it goes. I'll upgrade when I need to.
