GPU : Zotac 970
CPU : AMD FX-6300
Motherboard : Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-78LMT-S2P
RAM : 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Pro, 2133MHz
PSU : 450W
Air Cooled
AMD System
In for example arma 3 I get much lower FPS and I change my settings to try to counter this any help for this? Just wondering if i was to upgrade what to upgrade. I got my GPU for Christmas so i wont be changing that.

Solution
your cpu is already at its limits on that board though - overclocking defintely helps - an extra 10fps or so in arma games, just not on the board you own unless you like the smell of smoke & flames.

a 450w psu worries me though with a 6300 & a 970 as a combo - what model is it exactly ??

Your CPU is the weak point.

See Tom's CPU tier list for reference. The 970 is often paired with the i5-4590.

You will need to get a new CPU/Motherboard (if you don't already have one, go ahead and take this opportunity to upgrade to an SSD and change up to windows 10 (not because windows 10 is great, but because you're already doing so much work and the games using DX12 will be playable on your new system))

I did some research and it says that it will not increase fps if i get a SSD.
With a i5 im on a amd system and its cheaper so what would be the alternative?

The SSD was simply a suggestion to add if you would like when upgrading (it's a nice enhancement to any pc, it will improve load times, and reduce pop in textures).

Aside from improving your CPU, there is overclocking for your CPU. This will improve it's performance slightly. The 6300 is about as good as FX CPUs get after overclocking when it comes to gaming. Adding a good CPU cooler and cranking the 6300 to the limits will be your most affordable option in getting improved performance (this will not double your frame rate or anything, expect around a 20% improvement at most).
