Hi I am new to setting up aserver.

Anyways I am taking some certification, actually I have today its the 70-680 Windows 7 configuring exam.

Anyways I want to take another exam but I really have been interested in setting up a windows 2012 server.

I have a computer that I want to be the server.

My main question is, how should I connect the server to my network?

Should I connect the server directly to the internet, and then put another nic in server, then connect the other nic to my wireless router?

Or should I connect the server to the wireless router like all my other devices currently are.

Please help thanks.

Ray

The second implementation (on the back side of the router) would be the traditional implementation. It will depend on what you want to do and where you need to access this server from. Your router may have the capability to create a DMZ. The DMZ would be a half-way between solution.

What I want is to have the server give out dhcp addresses to my computers and to have dns setup on the server box. also I want the server to be the domain controller

also I am using the server for deployment services, and I want to be able to login to the server remotely from say like a hotspot using Remote Desktop services, or VPN something like that to test it out.

The reason I am setting this up is because I am going to need it for my 70-686 exam also I was thinking about taking the 70-410 exam which is configure a server for 2012

You can turn off DHCP on most routers so that the Windows server can be the DHCP source. DNS would probably require a port forward in the router to get access to the public DNS servers. I would still do it on the back side of a router because that is more like a production system. You wouldn't expose your PDC directly to the internet.

Hey thanks for your help, so is the sever that I am gonna setup gonna be handling the dns queries? or is it just gonna forward dns queries to the isp sever?

I'm not really sure how that works.

Is the dns server I am setting up just used for local comptuer names on my domain and then everything else that it can find, getting forward to the isp dns servers? Hope that makes sense.

oh ok, yea I just want it for local use, i really only need it because i have to have it to setup windows deployment services, and stuff like that

I am probably gonna set it up by turning off dhcp at the router and leaving everything behind the router
