Okay, so I decided with the help of the forum that my 970 SLI need to go.
So, here are the options:
AMD R9 295X2 / Titan / 980Ti

OR... stay with 970 SLI?

Solution

Then you're best off not doing anything. Anything within your budget is barely an upgrade if any. You could do 2 GTX 980.

Yeah, only reason why I even asked this here, is mainly regarding opinions on the AMD card, a lot of people bash it but i recently just came across this particular one and it looks like a complete beast.

and, I upgraded to the SLi 970 because I didn't have enough funds atm for the Titan/980 , but the benchmarks were on par or even destroying them on SLI optimised games.

Id love to find someone on this forum who owns the AMD though

i have never owned that particular card but i have ran plenty of amd card and they have all preformed as expected. i run majority amd card because of the power you get at the price point. they are a bit loader hotter and more power hungry though

I think I have caught the upgrade bug or something...

but mainly because of some sound arguments against it on this forum when I opened a thread regarding it earlier.

Hmm, fair point, the volts aren't a big concern since I don't pay for electricity haha :D Cooling is a non-issue too, I've only owned a mobile version(laptop) of the 290x(i think) and card that was pretty decent, but it crashed frequently during games and whatnot, is that a common problem or, have you had near to no problems with them?

The benches are so similar there is really no point whatsoever in my eyes, waste of money as you'd see little to no gain. Say you see 10fps gain at the very most(1080p), do you think that's worth it? The power/cost ratio would be terrible, something to think about.. It really depends on the titles you play, some games are better optimised for AMD and others NVIDIA. Wait for the new gen of cards.

Benchmarks @ 4k ultra

Assasins Creed: Black Flag
GTX 970 FTW SLI - 35 FPS Min 41.2 FPS Avg.
R9 295X2 - 29.4 FPS Min 36 FPS Avg.

Battlefield 4
GTX 970 FTW SLI - 45 FPS Min 52.3 FPS Avg.
R9 295X2 - 41 FPS Min 52.0 FPS Avg.

Far Cry 3:
GTX 970 FTW SLI - 31 FPS Min 38 FPS Avg.
R9 295X2 - 26 FPS Min 41 FPS Avg.

To my knowledge R9 295x2 is just two R9 290s in one card. The GTX 970 is better than the R290, so in theory 2x 970 is better than R9 295x2.. But as mentioned, it's down to the titles you play. If you enjoy dx9 titles, then the AMD card will excel. However it does seem the SLI 970 benches higher in most games, if you "upgrade" to the R9 295x2 I feel you'll be disappointed. Just my insight into it, goodluck with whatever you do.

Admirable
the 295x2 is two R9 290X GPUs on a single card. That would be a sidegrade, not an upgrade.

The titan is a downgrade.

The 980 TI is either an upgrade or downgrade depending on the game. If it supports multi GPU its a downgrade. If it only works with 1 gpu it's an upgrade.

You should wait till summer when AMD releases their next gen of cards...or fall-ish for Nvidia to release their next gen of cards.

Ah, this is the type of information I needed. I don't really want to 'side step' on to another GPU and just waste money, so all in all, the difference (if any) would be negligible; dependant on per game to game scenario.
