Hi all, long time reader, first time post. I hope this comes under "storage" and not "windows 10".
One of my PC's died so I thought I would remove one of the drive and stick it in an external caddy (I used a spare Iomega casing so it is decent quality).
The drive is a WD 3TB SATA and was in a Windows 10 system, it does not has the O/S, just 9 main directories of data.
When attaching to another Windows 10 PC, I can see all the folders in the root of the external drive, but can't open them.
I get "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder".
On clicking continue I get "You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab".
So in the security tab "I must have read prmissions to view the properties of this object" and click advanced to continue.
This is where I get a bit worried abouit knackering the drive.
It says "unable to display current owner" and I need read permissions.

Not sure what I need to do to change permissions. there is an "enable inheritance" option but I really don't want to stumble around trying something blindly.

Thanks for any help.

Hey there, Coronasan!

I'd suggest you to try taking full ownership of the drive and follow either one of these tutorials:
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/take-ownership-windows-8
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2808-take-ownership-file-folder-drive-registry-key-windows-8-a.html

Once you gain access, make sure you have a backup of that data stored somewhere else before tempering with the HDD.

Keep me posted. Hope this works for you! :)

Hi SuperSoph_WD

Tried editing permissions, but I was getting loads of individual file errors.

I think I will try:
takeown /F "G:" /R /D Y
where G: is the drive in question. I was not going to use the /A option.
