New build. Random hard freezes gaming and low load?

I have just built my first rig and as tradition deems it i have to say "im not the most tech savvy" of people in comparison to others so bear with me :)

My components:
NZXT H440 standard edition (4 fans included)
Windows 7 SP1 - OS
TP-LINK TL-WN851ND 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Adapter
Intel core i5 - 4690k (no OC atm) - CPU
NZXT Kraken x61 - CPU cooler
Gigabyte Z97x Game plus - Mobo
Msi GTX 970 ME 100 - GPU
Corsair vengeance (2x4 GB) low profile DDR3 1600mhz - RAM
Corsair RM650i (im away from the comp i'll edit if thats a wrong model) - PSU
SanDisk SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" SATA 3 - SSD
WD Blue 1TB 7200rpm - HDD

I have read so many forum posts about hard freezes where screen/hotkeys/keyboard/mouse dont work along with occasional mouse light turning off as if its no longer recognised. Holding the power button down and turning it back on makes the compter load as normal, really quickly as if nothing has happened. It doesnt blue screen and no error messages pop up first.

- I can leave it on for 5/6/7 hours without touching it and ive yet to have it freeze when coming back.
- Ive played a few games and it has froze within 10 minutes of playing or 5+ hours without any problems, totally random.
- If im on low load, maybe at most viewing a youtube video, it can freeze and has done many times.

Event log doesnt seem to throw up the same error but as it happens tonight (its inevitable at this point) ill make a note. The clock on the desktop screen doesnt continue once i power off also, even though its set correctly and should update automatically - i read its a problem with gigabyte mobo's and battery connectors or something?

Using CAM software, my temperatures are 30° idle for my cpu and 45° or so whilst gaming (Will update again if needed once i can get to my comp) so im lead to believe thats reasonable? I will also add other temperatures when i get back to my comp.

Memory and gigabyte mobos ive read alot about, seems to be the guaranteed mobo brand when looking at "freezing" problems in forums? I had to use XMP1 and change the frequency to 1600mhz instead of default 1333mhz. Also eddited bios settings such as DRAM volage up from 1.5v to 1.540v along with some setting being changed to "stability mode" over "normal". Both CPUID and my bios are showing the same info regarding the memory. Even with all this freezing still occurs just as randomly.

Also keep having pop ups saying "USB device not recognised" - tried altering settings in windows where theres no shutting off of usb devices and I editted "roothub" device in device manager > universal serial bus controllers to "Disable" some feature regarding power to devices plugged in. Still freezes.

As its a relatively new mobo gigabyte have F1 which of course froze multiple times, i updated to the latest "F2" and changed RAM back to 1600 etc for it to freeze within a minute of booting up as normal.

Whats the next step for me ? Should i be testing my hardware more like memtest - prime95 etc?
Also is it a driver issue because ive read freezing could be a driver issue, but hard freezing (no ctrl+alt+del) etc shows it to be hardware?

Appologies for the mass of words just been plaguing me for 4/5 days and im looking for some guidance so trying to give all the info i can - Thanks!

My apologies, I somehow missed that you are a non-skylake build, so my suggestion is likely irrelevant!

Are you talking about this?

I'd suggest trying MEMTEST to see if it's the memory causing these problems, I'd also recommend opening up event viewer (Should be a quick search away) and search up any problems that are logged/have occured
