I have been having this issue as of lately, some of my games freeze after an hour or so of gameplay, the screen freezes and the pc requires a full restart to get it working again.
System description:
Motherboard MSI 970-G46
PSU: High Power 650w 80+ bronze
CPU: AMD FX 8350 with SMART OC from the motherboard to about 4.3 GHz
GPU: Palit GTX 780ti Jetstream
RAM: 8 GB of Team Vulcan RAM at 1600
HDD:Toshiba 200 GB
All components are brand new except for the HDD.
Some games freeze after a while of gameplay, seems to happen oly with some older titles though, I have no problem running Shadow of Mordor or Attila Total War, most of these freezes have occurred with Battlefield 4 and Dragon's Dogma.
The only thing I recently changed was the GPU, I was using a Asus Radeon r9 280x Direct CU II Top.
I've ran all kinds of tests in attempting to find a solution:
3d mark whole tests and benches, no issues whatsoever.
MSI Kombustor, absolutely no problems, stressed the hell out of the gpu with this one
Attila Total War with the highest settings, 62.4 average framerate, smooth and with no issues
Shadow of Mordor on highest settings including HD Textures, average framerate was 91.2 with no stuttering or any artifacting, game is crystal clear.
MemTest on the RAM found 0 errors
The CPU however failed the test, ran Prime95, gave me this message than the pc froze again just like during gameplay:
ERROR: ILLEGAL SUMOUT
Possible hardware failure, consult readme.txt file, restarting test.
I did check the temps on CPU, sitting at about 44 degrees on idle, it did go up during the test to 71 degrees before freezing.
This seems like CPU overheating, though before changing the GPU, this week, I had no issues whatsoever, been using the components for about 2 months minus the GPU.
Airflow is not an issue, I am using an open case setup, there is no dust, everything is clean.
My only other concern would be the PSU, it moght not handle GPU, though if that were the case how is the issue connected to the CPU.
I would gladly replace the CPU stock cooler believe me, but unfortunately my budget is 0 as of now.

Solution
When it comes to overclocking i never trust for the utilities to do it for me. There is a lot of guide out there for overclocking. If you need help you can ask for advice at our overclocking or cpu section

44º on iddle seems really a lot, at first i would bet that the auto overlock borked something.

I would try to put the cpu at stock speed and try to run first Prime95 and then bf4 for several hours, if its ok, i would then try *manually* to Oc the processor.

I reapplied the O.C. from the motherboard, now it just bluescreens using Prime95, ran Fallout 4 for about an hour, no issue, cpu temp did not exceed 64 degrees, I will try to see if I can oc it myslef, though I have no experience with cpu oc manually.
