Hi all,

Just got a new WD 2TB Black drive for my new build today, installed it alongside my SSD boot drive, formatted.

However on the initial 10 mins of being in my system it was making a clunking sound, now about 30 mins+ in it sounds like a normal drive with the Exception it occasionally clunks.

Just wondering if I have a bad drive or is this normal?

Thanks

EDIT: I have recorded about 6 mins of the drive, sorry but as this is a new pc I don't have the software to convert it to upload it to youtube, so i have put it on a shareable google drive: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8HDvQ3oZFi6c3pzVEJ6clNUQjA&usp=sharing

Ok.. I ran the quick test took 2 mins but for the first 30 seconds the drive was clunking and vibrating like crazy, result was a Pass - is this normal?

Hi there Andrew Sotheran,

Mechanical drives do make some noises. Some are louder than others. I don't think that this is a sound you should worry about. Yet, keep in mind that you should always keep your most important data stored on at least two places.
Apart from that, I would suggest you to run the extended DLG test as well. I would agree with Hawkeye22 and say that it will not hurt to run some third party tests.

You can always try something simple as just re-seating the drive, attaching it to another SATA port or using different cables.

Let me know how this goes,

Right I have switched SATA ports, re-positioned the drive on all of its side and changed cables, I have used WD DataLifeGuard diagnostic (for the first 30 seconds the drive was clunking and vibrating like crazy, although the result was a Pass), HD Tune (nothing says its fine) and so does crystaldiskinfo

How close are you when you hear it? If you've got the case open and/or have your head down near the drive and it sounds loud, that's one thing, but if you are using the computer in a normal environment and can still hear it, that's different. Since all tests pass, I think you will be fine. As D_Know said, if you have critical data on the drive, it's best to have it backed up somewhere anyhow.

Normal distance away (like on the floor next to me about 2-4ft away), case is closed both side panel on. Using it how I did with the family PC aka normal environment and it is easily audible.
