Hello! I have a Mustek Powermust 1400 USB uninterruptible power supply(not brand new, got it from a friend) and i managed to replace the batteries but i can't seem to "manage" it in windows 8.1. I installed viewpower V.2.04 software(from http://mustek.ro/descarca-software) and it is not showing up in the software. The UPS has printer-like usb cable and when i connect it to the pc(for the first time) it installs a "usb to serial" device. What seems to be the problem?

This is the back:

Please note the RS232 port in upper-left.

That 9 pin port was one of ways that peripherals were connected quite some years back. Replaced by parallel, SCSI, and USB connections. Various combinations were used: parallel to serial, vice versa. All sorts of variations.

Many IT folks had a collection of adapters that could be used when the physical connections were different.

There was a standard interface for RS232 but there were also some proprietary pin-out devices as well.

Apparently your system is detecting the USB to RS232 (printer like) connection and installing the applicable driver. Or that is all the software knows to expect.

If you have the correct USB to RS-232 cable then all should be well. Or something like a USB...

However, if there is any proprietary connectivity then you may need to dig a bit deeper. E.g., find the required USB - RS232 pin connections and build a custom cable. Unless someone happens to have them available.....

To be honest i connected (wrongfully as i would figure out later) the UPS to my pc via the lower left USB type B port. I will try to find an usb to serial cable and connect the UPS again. Also i contacted the manufacturer, explaining my problem and i think that the answer will be similar to your answer @Ralston18.

Glad to hear that.

By the way, I would not say "wrongfully".

The connection you made seems a natural thing to do and if the software was up-to-date (or what ever) it might have recognized your/the USB-A to USB-B connection making this all moot.

Again it also could be proprietary and need a special USB-A to USB-B cable.....

Before all of the standards were fully in place lots of people made money building custom cables to work around or otherwise satisfy the required pin-outs and connector gender changes. Some of those cables and adapters were expensive..... People would cut good cables to get the necessary end connectors and solder the wires together for workarounds. Thanks for the nostalgia.... :)
