Hi guys, newbie here on the forums. I badly need your help about my desktop issue.. I have this pc for more than a year. Recently, it turns off without any warning then turns back on but wont boot. cpu and system Fans spins and do not stop, dvd drives can open and close, but mobo doesnt beep and wont get to post screen. Mouse and keyboard does not also lights up and work. I will need to unplug the power cord for more than 15 minutes and plug it back before it can boot up again or discharge the power completely. The sudden turning off issue is random and I cant figure out whats wrong. Im sure its not the cpu overheating since sometimes pc will work 12 hours straight even while runningn stress test apps without any issue and sometimes it will turn off suddenly after 1 or 2 hours even on idle. I have also used memtest to check the ram and no erros were found. I have no spare psu nor mobo to test so im really not sure what parts do i need to rma.
These are my pc specs:
i5 4460
gigabyte H97M D3H
seasonic G550 80+ gold psu
gskill ripjaws ram ddr3 1600 dual(4gb x2)
dlink wireless lan adapter
no gpu yet since im using the i5's igp
windows 8.1 professional 64 bit

any help will be greatly appreciated.. thank you so much

Hi. I tried taking out the wifi lan adapter but my pc still turns off randomly.. Sometimes it works 6 hours straight running cpu intensive tasks w/o any issue and sometimes will turn off even while just browsing the net.. When it turns off, it turns on back again but wont post or beep.. fans will just continue spinning until I plig the power cord for more than 15minutes or discharge the power completely before the pc boots again.. I really am at lost here.. Do you think this is a sign of a failing psu or mobo or both?

1) Go to the event viewer to check the error, if there is any error in the event log. How to http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/win8/windows8-event-viewer.htm
2)You can go to the BIOS to check those voltages (+12V, +3.3V, and +5V). The PSU Voltage Tolerances http://pcsupport.about.com/od/insidethepc/a/power-supply-voltage-tolerance.htm Or install the HWiNFO64 http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php to check the +12V, +3.3V,and +5V, and the cpu temp too.
3) Also try to use the intel XMP profile in the BIOS, if you don't set it up yet.
4) Try to use the CCleaner to clear up the PC, it may help. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

3.) I tried enabling xmp profile in BIOS but computer turns off suddenly after an hour of usage.

4.) I installed ccleaner to clean temp files but it is always interrupted because the pc still turns off randomly. Im quite sure its not overheating since sometimes I can run prime95 for more than 6 hours without issue and cpu temp is at 68-69 Celcius under prime95

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi cin,
1. Yes, all the event41 kernel errors displayed on the image above are the times when my pc suddenly turns off. Its the same event41 error for all cases.

2. Im sorry, these are the voltage readings from my BIOS

s4u8U1.jpg

3. The only add on device to my pc are the wifi lan adapter and front panel fans. I tried removing the wifi lan but issue still persist.. Havent tried removing the two 120mm front fans. They are directly connected and powered to the psu and not on the mobo. You can see on the bios image above that only one system fan is detected aside from the cpu fan since only back panel fan is connected to the mobo..

4. I managed to run ccleaner and it only deletes my browser temp files and found no other issues.. To rule out the possibility that recent software, fragmented disk or driver updates causes the turn off issue, i tried booting my pc in safe mode with just the basic windows drivers but it still turns off after an hour..

I really appreciate your response and help cin.. I really hope I can pinpoont the exact problem.. Im leaning towards a defective psu but with the seasonic brand and 80+ gold cert, I cant imagine it will go down after almost 1 year and 1 month old.. :(

Alright the PSU does look good.
But how about your Hard drive S.M.A.R.T. from the CrystalDiskInfo software. Do you try to run it yet?

Do you use any antivirus, and you may try disable it and also disconnect the internet, let the pc idle to see it will turn off or not. And dn't forget turn it back on after you done.

If the hard drive does look fine, the problem maybe from the MB, one more try that will be to try update the BIOS. You can download and install the @BIOS from gigabyte, use the #2 method : "Update the BIOS without Using the Internet Update Function" http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/images/utiltiy_atbios_uefi.pdf
If you still have problem after that, may contact gigabyte, because psu, ram, hard drive, all are fine, so the problem maybe from the MB, because the cpu will be the last component has problem, except it got burned.

Hi cin, thank you for your response. I will try to run Cystaldiskinfo and update you with the results.. I have tried disabling my antivirus and even booted my pc in safe mode but problem still persist.. Is it safe to update the bios with my current issue? What if my pc suddenly turns off while in the process of updating the bios? Aside from the psu, Im also suspecting that the mobo is the issue since if my pc turns off, it turns on again but wont post. The fans, dvd drive and other periperals powered by the psu is running.

Hi cin,

I downloaded crystaldiskInfo and this is what it shows

hJH346.png

Havent tried flashing the BIOS yet. I tried taking out the two 120mm fans from the psu. I have also removed the right cpu case panel where the back of the mobo and other wiring management is located. I want to rule out if the cpu case metal panel is touching anything that can cause a short for the mobo and the PSU. So far, Im typing this with my pc for almost 3 hours without the issue and im also running prime95 at the same time. If it turns off again, as you have suggested that the psu is okay, the mobo may be the culprit.

Update: it still turns off even checking if there is anything that can cause a short. Is this a motherboard issue?
